  • candy red over engine turning

Had a chance to mess around today. This is the clutch cover from my snowmobile did a quick polish job and then some engine turning covered in candy red and the hardware and gloss black. Pretty cool efect.

Yeah there are a few outgassing spots but most of theat will be covered by my tool kit and spare belt.

Looks very cool............can you tell me how you did the turnings? I haven't been brave enough yet to try it. I'm assuming a grinder but I just wanted to see for sure before I tried it.

      Thanks

      Jeff

Alright I will share my secret. I think Eastwood sells a kit for doing this and well im cheap and like to use what I have on hand. I wetsanded the piece with 600grit then hit it with white compound on a loose wheel. If your are going to turn the whole piece there is no need to really polish it out. Next you will need a steady hand or a drill press I used the latter. I chucked up my 2" shank and backing pad from my die grinder if you are not familar with these this is what it looks like

            http://www.levineautoparts.com/3m052roldisb.html

I found mine at Lowes but most hardware or auto body supply shops sell these. Next I fliped the piece over to the backside that wont be seen and tried a couple of different pads and pressure to see which one I liked the best I found the Blue fine pad to give m the swirl I was looking for here is a link

            http://www.levineautoparts.com/3mrolsurcond2.html

I just eye balled this started at one corner and worked my way down then to the next row and so on. Once I got the whole work piece filled in I went back and where ever I had 4 swirls coming together there was an empty space so i just repeated the whole process till it was done.
There really is no rule to this you can overlap swirls or use a random pattern different pressure and differt pads for totally different effects. You can get roloc disks in 2,3,4 inch sizes if you want a smaller swirls your can use a wooden dowel of lets say 1/2 and use the dowel as a template to cut a circle from a regular scotch brite pad or fine grit sand paper and then use a little 3m spray addhisve.

Well hope that helps any more questions feel free to ask.
