  • Acrylic clear vs glass clear

For those of you that use both regular and acrylic clear - is the acrylic significantly better than Glass Clear or the Crystal Clear Super Durable High Gloss Clear?

Would it be noticeable side-by-side? Will the regular clears lay down as smooth as the acrylic?

Is acrylic worth the extra complication, cost, and contamination issues?

    Thanks.

i tried both super durable and diamond acrylic and yes i see a difference , the diamond looks clearer thinner (no duildup efffect) and smootherflowing .
but i still keep the super durable in stock becuse it is cheaper to buy and the acrylic needs a more complete cleaning of the system after use ,it is really not compatible with other powders

I agree with Baz, the Acrylic clear is a great product, especially when coating over metallic

Re: Acrylic clear vs glass clear

I just purchased and tried the Clear Acrylic that was on sale recently for the first time. I cannot get it to flow out. I had a Purple Matalic base that looked good, no orange peel, etc. I shot the acrylic over it until I had good coverage, but when baked(375 @ 15 minutes) it looks almost like a wrinkle finish, textured and no gloss at all.

I re-did it and tried a lower temperature, same result. Am I getting to much power on, or to little. As stated this is my first attempt with acrylic clear.

I'm pretty sure the base was fully cured. I used a stripped aluminum bud bottle and the Purple Metallic, also from here, that has a cure schedule of 400 for only 10-12 minutes. I think I baked it for a good 15 and the aluminum heats up quickly.

Today, just as a test I took the same bottle, sanded the clearcoat smooth, applied more clear, and still the same result. I may try a plain un-coated aluminum or metal part and see if I get any different results.

The basecoat should be cured at part metal temperature and from what you are writing it does not sound as if she was cured out all the way...

I guess I should have been more specific when I said I baked the base for 15 minutes or more. I use an IR thermometer on everything, and when I shot the aluminum bottle it was over 400. I then baked it for another 15 plus minutes.

I will try the clear on a bare part and see if it will flow out. What is the typical result if the acrylic clear is applied to thin or thick?

              Thanks

What I have found with the Diamond, is not to put it on to heavy. It don't like heavy. If, and it takes practice, you put it on just right, you will be amazed at how nice and smooth and slick it is. Not to heavy. It is fussy that way. It will OP and get rippley. (is there such a word)?
