  • Motorcycle frame prep?

I had this frame blasted, and cleaned. But during all the times i have handled it I have left oil from hands on the part. Also the oil tank still had a smidget of oil that ran out and onto the frame. What is the best way to reclean this before coating it ?

After you wipe the frame down I would run it through a heat cycle (425to450) to cook all the oil and road grime out of the welds and insid the frame....

Cant be done its built into the frame(its a Yamaha YZF bike). only way to remove it is to cut the frame apart

Make sure and flush that oil tank out real good or you'll have a heavy smoker in the oven! I agree with the brake cleaner it works great and leaves no residue.

Make sure it is NOT the ABS safe stuff tho. It does leave a residue.

What did you end up using to clean it and how did it turn out?

BTW, A YZF should be a wet sump. No external oil tank, the oil is held in the engine.

Sorry but every YZF/WR/YFZ I have ever dealt with is dry sump motors. The oil tank is built into the frame rail, and has 2 oil lines running to the motor, very little oil is stored in the motor. White brothers makes a conversion kit to turn them into wet sump motors, but in factory form they are dry sump.

I ended up using about 4 cans of brake parts cleaner on it and the subframe, it came out like this:

Ya know, I worked at a Yamaha dealer for 12 years, you'd think I would have caught that. My bad, yes, you're of course right, the YZF (dirt bike) is a dry sump. I'm a street bike guy, so when I saw YZF, I was thinking YZF R6 or R1, streetbike, which is wet sump. The 4 stroke dirt bikes never even crossed my mind. Sorry for the confusion. Ignore me.

Supermoto is a bunch of fun. I do a lot of trackdays, and I've managed to get some seat time on various supermoto's. Tons of fun. I've been wanting to build one for a while, but this isn't going to be the year. I just bought a new bike, then lost my job, so another bike is out of the question for now.
