what is your mil thickness ? Orange peel can be caused from too thin or too thick a mil thickness. Another cause for Orange peel is the heat-up rate is too slow...was the substrate smoothe to start with ?

can't tell you the mil thickness king but the first time i sprayed it on the light side . the second time i went a little heavier and the third time i used a differant powder and tried hot flocking a second coat. all the same outcome. the piece is smooth to begin with. it looks like a stamped steel piece with the front rounded part welded on. funny thing is the rounded part comes out better than (but not perfect) than the flat sides. i know flat pieces are the worst and of course it has to be black but i'm not going to let this piece go out looking like this.

How far are you away from the part ? remember flat pieces are difficult.....have you cured it out all the way ?

i'm spraying it at about 60kv 6-8" away. i cured it out all 3 times with the oven already at 400. the ground seems to be fine because the powder is attracted to the part with no problems.

Harleydad, i have been using the pbtp mirror black but i have the ral 9005 jet black. do you think i would get better results with the 9005? customer just wants "gloss black". i use a ir gun and the pictures are kind of hard to take because it was inside at night.

dad, no powder comeing off the part. i'm using the standard tip. it is thin maybe i'm curing too high and bringing up to temp too fast? it seems to reach 400 pretty quick because of it's thinness.

This is a textbook thread for resolving an individual problem and exactly what the forum is here for . Good description of the problem, good feedback, good resolution, excellent results.

So basically the cure was, a lower temp for a longer duration and a bit farther away from the part with a little more powder. Is this correct?

You gotta tell us what you did. I'm in the same boat right now with a big chunk of alluminum. The round tubing comes out excellent the flat square tube is orange peeled all to hell. First time large orange peel, second time small orange peel. I need this part perfect! Did you sand between coats or just scotch brite the finish?
