  • What color/colors??

Got this piece from a friend of a friend
I was thinking of Coating it and taking it too my local HD shop and see if i can leave it as a display. It might/might not work.
Anyhow what color/colors would be best to advertise on this 1st thought was candy but not sure if HD guys/girls are into that. Even thought dividing it up in sections and doing a few dif. colors.
So all you HD guys give me some feedback please.

Just my opinion here. I am an HD guy, and you dont see to many crazy colors out there on Harleys. You NEED black and orange for sure. Silver or a type of chrome (i.e. ultimate chrome, ss chrome, ect.). That would be what I started with. Oh yeah, take a look in the powders also, PBTP has a whole little section with Harley colors and textrues in there, may be something else you want to look into.

Oh yeah, and that appears to me to be a smaller cam cover or something, you may want to get a derby/ primary cover (which are much larger) to attract more attention. You can get them on ebay usually at a pretty fair deal.

I think that is a derby. Cam cover on a Harley isn't round. It has a round medallion, but that wouldn't have 3 holes, it would have 2. Five holes would be a Twin Cam, Four would be a Sporty. 3 holes makes it an Evo derby cover. I think.

Anyhow, if it were me, and I wanted to attract the Harley crowd, I wouldn't go to crazy with colors. Harley guys like chrome. Sure, black and orange are HD's corprate colors, but that only matches so many bikes. You can't go putting orange on a blue bike, or a green one. I haven't graduated to masking, or multiple colors yet, but if you're a good masker, here's what I'd do: I'd mask the Eagle and banner, then coat the rest of the cover. Black would be the most popular color. Flat or gloss, you're choice. But coat it black and leave the eagle and banner chrome. That would catch attention. Or coat it in blue, or red, if you can get close to HD colors.

Another thing you can do is get you hands on some smooth derby covers. You can get used non-chrome ones cheap as peanuts. Do them in single colors. As many as you can find. Try to match them to Harley factory colors. This will not only show off the quality of your work but also appeal to guys who may want a color matched derby.

          Re: What color/colors??

Not bad advice, I would add to that wrinkles, especially the S@S black that PBTP sells, its a ringer for the night train wrinkle.

I only mention the Orange and Black because it is Harley Davidson. Not so much as to put those colors on peoples bikes, but more for them to notice you and your work. All the other colors are great, but you need something to draw the attention to your work, and matching a bunch of colors to bikes would be cool, but how many people have that one certain color? 1 out of 20? 50? There are hundreds of harley colors out there is all I am getting at.

          Just one mans opinon.

I didn't mean to sound like I was arguing with you Gong, just offering another view. And you're right. Really, the color won't matter, the quality of the work will. You just want people to see the possibilities. For Harey stuff, I always go black by default. Only because experience in the business (the cycle biz, not the powder coating biz) has taught me that black is by far the most common color of Harley. And also, people with all colors of bike will buy black stuff. If you have a blue bike, a red derby wouldn't match. But a black derby can go on anything.

The wrinkle black is a good idea, I hadn't thought of that.

If you REALLY want to be fancy, leave the cover chrome. Paint the eagle brown, with a white head and yellow talons and beak. Do the banner in white, leave the letters black. Lots of work, but it would really show what you can do with your gun.

                  Re: What color/colors??

To make it possibly easier, how about mixing up the colors with the "liquid to powder" and hand paint the powder with a brush? That way you could "paint" on multiple colors and only have to cure once!

Black Chrome II from PBtP. The Harley folks will wet themselves over this color and it goes with damb near anything out there.
