  • A TRICKY PART WARM UP

i have a harley swing arm that has been customized to make it into a trike. there is a bar that is welded between the swing arm that is about 1" thick and 11" wide. after i shoot it i'm going to assume that the rest of the swing arm parts are going to heat up faster than that 1"x11" part. if that happens will the other part of the awing arm "over cure" before the large hunk of steel reaches cure temps? maybe i should warm it up first to get that piece of the swing arm "half way " to cure temp? any ideas ?

quite similar but i let cool until the thicker section drops to about 100 or 125 , at that point the remaining sections will probably be at room temp , so when they hit the oven if you cure the thin parts on the high side of the curing chart and the thicker parts on the low side of the chart you should be ok.
this happens on some older frames that have thin tubing with cast neck piece and i get good results this way

thanks guys i will try it on sunday. while we are talking about it do you know what coating is on some of this steel? it's got a blackish/blue look to it and it looks like the only way for me to get it off is to wire wheel it or grind it off. it must be some kind of coating the steel manufacturers put on to stop rust. man is this stuff tough to get off!!

The bluish-black is mill scale from the manufacturing process. It needs to be removed either by blasting, a wire wheel, or by sanding. Coarse Scotchbrite wheels do a pretty good job. Blasting is by far the easiest way to remove it, and also gives the powder something to "bite" into to help prevent flaking and chipping.

        Best of luck.
