  • How is this guy making any money?

-Alot of my work is stock car guys.

-Right now I am not equipped to do a full frame, but I am considering building an oven big enough. That being said, a local competitor is set up to do them and does a TON of cars.

-If anyone on here has seen a northeast style dirt modified racecar frame then answer me this. He is doing them for $550, regardless of the fact that most of them come powder coated from the chassis builder. Supposedly he farms them out for the sandblasting. His blaster charges $250 a frame, and he charges another $300 to coat them.

-I dont know how he could possibly get away with charging that and make any money. A few of his customers have about crapped themselves when I say it is going to be $200 for me to coat the front and rear bumpers and nerf bars.

-I think about the fact that I get around $250 for an ATV frame, and that is less than the amount of tubing than a set of bumpers and nerfs. I don't see how anyone can charge any less that 500 plus blasting on a full chassis.

HD you do them for five hundred is that just coating or stripping/blasting and coating? I wonder if he is just coating over the previous coating and telling the customers he is stripping and recoating.

Thats about what they are. These are full tube cars, no stock frames at all. Not that it is even relevant, because they are about the same size and the same amount of tubing. The bumpers and nerf bars are more rugged than those, taking about 60 feet of tubing or so to build a set. But I guess if that is what the going rate is...... How much powder does it take to do one of those?

well i also think for the bigger powder coating shops things might go better/quicker//easier for them.where some of us little guys and gals it might take us a longer, because we are not set up as nice as they all are.So in return they may be able to do it a little cheaper.

You nailed it. Having the facility and manpower makes all the difference in even being able to take on a job like this. It can be done by a one-man-show, but if you have to build a rack or expand your oven right out of the gate on the very first one you do, expect to loose your azz, or break even if your lucky. The more of them you do, the easier it will be and you'll find all sorts of ways to make it more profitable.

I think if I remember correct is that the coater north of me charges $300 for auto and truck frames coming to him ready to just prep and shoot. I am not sure what his prep is?

I have a family member that builds tube chassis's for race cars. I'm not set up to do such large parts either (hopefully in the future), but one of the other local powder coaters charges $2,500 to do the chassis's. This includes the sandblasting.
