  • If you had to do it over again...

building your oven, what would you want to improve? Ive done some research and Im going to try to take this on. Im looking at a 3x3x6' deep. Im starting to get more intrest and this seems to be a good size. What would be the order of purchase to kind of spread some of the cost out. Im sure I will wind up buying a brake from harbor frieght for $200. Im also trying to finish out a 12x24 addition on my shop for this. Any help would be greatly appreciated . this forum has been a big help. Thanks, Mike.

Im starting on my 1/5/09 I will post pictures as I go. My size will be 4x4x8. One of the recommended things would be a small door for checking part temperatures. This seems to be one that a lot of people wish they had put in that they didnt.

You might want to consider a viewing window. I like to watch mine in the beginning, so if it starts to out gas of just plain start taking a $hit, I can grab it out before full cure. It's easier to work with before you see a mess after it's fully cured.

I didn't build my oven Ted did, mine is the 3x3x6 inside measurements. I have the window and agree about it's usefulness as JTW37 said. I watch my stuff for flowout so I know when to pull the peices to remove masking. As well as he said to watch for possible problems. Course you can't see all of it but it does help. Size of the oven build should be decided by what you want to get into as far as coating goes and the space you have to put it. I think Juan's topic showed the best way to start. Decide your needs then build a frame and go from there. Goodluck and ask away if you need help.

Also one thing that I know im doing for sure is I am making it where I can roll a rack into my oven. I think this will make life much easier for transfering parts to and from the oven. Especially for the larger parts like the quad frames and so forth. I have already picked up my steel casters for the cart

I have one of Ted's ovens also. If I were building one myself, I would use a piece of sheet metal for the bottom and set it right on the floor. It would be nice to just roll stuff in without needing a special rack with an undercarriage for handling the big stuff. Commercial coating ovens don't even have floors. They sit right over the bare concrete floor. The advantage to Ted's is that they can be moved around very easily since they are built on casters.

I was trying to come up with an answer for this thread and that's pretty much the same thing I was thinking about. Being able to move the oven around is great and all, but I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle of having to deal with the height different from the floor to the the oven. I guess we'll see when the bigger jobs start to happen, although it's already getting annoying.

If I ever end up building something bigger than my 6x4x3 I will definitely just build it on top of the concrete.

couple of weeks [just scored 52 metal studs off craiglist for 50 bucks].the base will have
recessed casters allowing it to sit 1/2 off the ground.
