  • RAL 3015 LIGHT PINK Question

I have a customer that wanted a set of my aluminum grilles pc'd in "Baby Pink" with a slight metallic sparkle/flake. PTBTP's "RAL 3015 LIGHT PINK" is the color that I showed her, and she loves it. So, I ordered a pound of the light pink, along with 1 oz of ILLUSION STARDUST SPARKLE SILVER PEARL flake additive.

I wanted to test shoot it on a scrap piece of aluminum to see what it looked like cured, as some powders have a slightly different look on the bare aluminum. I sprayed the pink, cured it, then removed the piece and shot the clear/metal flake mix. I had a hard time getting the clear to stick, so it went on a little thicker. I made sure to leave a small area uncoated for the ground clip, and I shot the second coat about 5 minutes after I pulled the piece out of the oven. After I cured the clear/metal flake the piece came out looking more like a "peachy" color, than the light pink color. So, I went back and shot another piece of scrap to see if I could get it looking better with a flat black base coat. The pink seemed to come out better with the flat black base coat. Is this normal for RAL colors? Is there a better way to apply a second coat with the hobby gun (cure times, cooling time, best grounding tech.)? Any help would be great, as I am definitely a novice (been powder coating for about 2 months now).

    Equipment I am using:

    EW Hobby Gun
    Electric Kitchen Oven
    Curing at 400* F

    Thank you in advance!

Re: RAL 3015 LIGHT PINK Question

I have used this same color and for some reason it can not be clear coated or it will turn that peach color. I tried a few different clears including acrylic all with the same results. Matt checked with the supplier and I think they told him it had something to do with the pigments required to match that color.

I wish I had the extra cash-o-la for an IR gun. However, I would like to build a "real" PC Oven first.

Until then, I have found a pretty effective and much cheaper alternative for accurate temp readings. I just touch the powder coated part to my tongue, and I use the amount of time I can hold it there as a "unit" of measure. Another bonus to using the "Tongue Temp" is I have gained a higher tolerance to my wife's cooking, much less choking involved now-a-days (unless she reads this)

Just kidding, my wife doesn't cook

Johny, you fit right in I don't cook either but I am the Queen of the microwave and paper plates

I looked at the panel of Starbright Pink which is a candy like I have never seen .... the starbright in the sun has the look of diamonds sparkling in the sunlight or a crystal.

I did a frame with that pink and when I shot it a clear it came out orange. I tried a couple of different clears and got the same result. I ended up giving it to the customer with a clear

            Thanks King!

I guess I shouldn't say that she can't cook. My wife will cook, but only if I've been a good boy. So, she doesn't ever cook

I fire up the grill anytime I can. Yes, even in the Michigan winters . I just pull the grill right up to the slider door on our deck, and never have to step outside Nothing beats some BBQ Chicken, ribs, or a nice medium rare T-bone in the dead of winter

The "Starbright Pink" was too dark of a pink. The customer wanted a "Baby Pink", which is basically a light pink. I add a small amount of the "silver sparkle" to the cup, but it didn't really show all that well. How much should I add? Oh, I should add that the silver sparkle had me looking like I just got done rollin' around with a high school cheerleader (my wife didn't cook that night).
