  • Outsourcing chemical strip?

So I've posted about possibly outsourcing sand blasting to local shops for paint removal. I was thinking of doing this for both cost reasons and equipment limitations. However, we're running into a few parts (wheels, small frames, misc brackets, etc) that are small enough to fit in our blaster but it's just too difficult to remove paint with it. Using 80 grit glass beads can remove some paint and it's great at leaving a nice surface to coat, but it does nothing on OEM finish on wheels for example.

This means we usually end up having to do several coats of Aircraft Stripper, works great, but it's time consuming and the cost adds up quickly as we keep going through gallons of it. So I was wondering if any of you have ever taking parts to a place like a chrome plating shop to have them remove the finish. It would be great if I could find such a place and have them just hand me bare metal parts, then we can blast them in house quickly and at a lower cost. What should I look under to find such places? What kind of facilities have this ability? I can see this being a great way to save time and money, as well as keeping chemicals out of my home shop. Any ideas, comments, though?

    Thanks!

I have a guy that repairs gas tanks, so I take anything big to him. I pay him $35 an hour. I have read that some are paying as much as $65 an hour. But an hour can get a lot done, if he has the right equipment. I found another guy that does it in his garage, but he wasn't steady with his price. Just ask around, you should be able to find someone. Never tried a chemical stripper at a chrome shop. They were to high priced to have plating removed.

I ran into trouble trying to out source chrome removal. I called every plating shop in the twin cities and no one would strip any chrome off if they weren't re-chroming it themselves. A few said, "we don't do car parts". Like it matters!!!

I guess with that said, make sure you tell them what you are stripping.

Why don't you get five gallons of cybersolv and a turkey fryer. Then you'll have a small parts stripper tank doesn't require much room and only smells bad when heating. And only then when you take the lid off. You could set it outside to heat and strip and then store it in doors when not in use for safe keeping.
I do this and it works great, fast, and makes it so blasting goes faster. Also are you still using the siphon feed gun that came with your cabinet? I switched to the pressure blaster on my cabinet and wow you wouldn't believe how much faster it blasts. I'm getting ready to do a ten gallon tank next.

Harley, can you PM me your number again? I got a new phone and lost almost all contacts from the last few months including yours.

I have only spoken with Shelly briefly about getting setup with a 55 gallon drum, heater, and some cybersolve. The initial cost is something I just can't justify right now with all the other expenses. We're not generating enough business to justify it but we can't continue to generate all that work without a faster way of stripping substrates, kind of a catch 22.

That's why I'm hoping to find a local shop that can strip down a few parts while we generate the income to justify the big cybersolve purchase. Although I gotta admit, we're currently spending just as much on Aircraft Stripper as we would on Cybersolve, just in the long run.

Thats why I suggested 5 gals. It will do a lot of small parts which would save you time and money. I too can't afford a 55 gal. drum. But I am setting up a 10 gal tank. If you can do 10 gals it will be deep enough to do more parts. I understand bugets, I feel your pain. I'll pm you the number.

Thanks man. Seems like you've had some experience with what I'm looking for so a phone call to pick your brain for a few minutes would be very helpful.

rbroker, have you tried Kustom Shine Metal Werks? The contact there is Chris Yager, and is located outside of St. Cloud, MN somewhere. His phone # is 320-255-0481 or 320-290-0882. You can also email him at [email protected]. I met him at a car show last year, and he does both chrome removal and replating at a pretty reasonable rate. Hopefully he's still in business.

                        Re: Outsourcing chemical strip?

Just got off the phone with a local automotive plating place and got a quote of 40 ea. per 18" wheel to chemically strip paint/powder. This sounds fair, couple of bucks higher than I wanted to but I think I can work something out with them.

Only thing that would make this even sweeter would be not having to blast them after the chemical strip. Is this acceptable or should we blast them?

Well they claim I will get a clean substrate that is ready to coat.... I'm sure it would still require a good bath and off-gassing.

I don't even know why I'm asking, I know we'll end up blasting them any way just to be safe.

                            Re: Outsourcing chemical strip?

I have chemically stripped aluminum wheels and valve covers before with DZolve 1012 and then coated them after giving a good washing with soap and water then going over them with scotchbrite instead of blasting. It worked very well. The wheels I did that way because they wouldn't fit in my blast cabinet. The valve covers I did had a non-removable baffle on the underside so I didn't want to blast them and risk having trapped media destroy a newly rebuilt motor.

My local stripping place has a Burn off oven, and it is fairly cheap... I had a quad frame that was powder coated, they only charged 60 to strip it.
