  • Price check please

Some of you might have seen those differential covers I have done.

They are cast steel, weigh 14 lbs (approx) and have heavy oils from the casting process. This requires 2 outgassings and blastings just to be sure it's all clean. This method has worked well for me.

Now, instead of the 2 color scheme, let's assume I have about 100 at a time going for single color. In addition to the prep time there will be time involved for masking the gasket surface, and plugging the fill plug threads.

    How much per cover?

Would a chemical dip be in my favor at this point?

Thanks in advance for the input. I respect your opinions highly.

    They come like this

    Re: Price check please

    Approx 11x11" 4" deep

2.5 hours total in the oven for outgassing. To be honest about 20 blasting minutes each. ( this I could make quicker when weather permits)

    5 minutes masking time?
I am guessing as I haven't done them on a production level, but would imagine the numbers would be in line once a repetitive cycle is developed.

With the correct racks I could hang over 30 per batch with air room to spare

    Assuming 85" x 40" x 40" oven space

Is that out gassing time per batch or all 100
Yes, per batch. Lots of release agent from the cast sand mold

I think it may be diesel fuel actually.

The colors will vary, but nothing fancy.

They do take a bit of time to reach PMT, however, not as long as you'd think. About 25-30 minutes for a full cure.

However, a full oven of these may take a bit longer to reach temp.

          Thanks!
Take your time. I have all day.

If you have a secret formula you are using I am interested.

            Thanks Harleydad

Looks like I need to rethink the process a bit. At this point going to a chemical strip may be cost effective, yes?

If there was a way to dip and wash them I could save a bunch of time.

Ideas? This is foreign territory to me now.

You thinking of chemical cleaning to avoid the blasting all together?
              Yeah-
