KL or zinc?

I'm redoing a steel star and it's pitted pretty bad. I've used All Metal to fix the major pits only. Now should I use KL primer to smooth then the color or zinc rich for better protection then color OR how about zinc first then the KL primer and finally color? I'm thinking about using a phosphate bath in there somewhere also! The colors will be red, white and blue...

I used the Kl for the first time the other day. I was impressed w/ the powder attraction to it, but as far as filling in imperfections, I didn't see where it did that at all. Maybe I put it on too thin, I don't know

I like the filling it does, but for me, I sand as smooth as poss in between each coat. The KL fills evenly so like bondo you have sand off the extra around the dent, etc. until you get to the edges of the imperfection. Otherwise, you're just raising the good and bad evenly and not seeing the holes filled...does that make sense?

The phosphate would be applied before any powder.

Yes that would be first. I'm not sure how well zinc primer fills if at all, that's why I was thinking the KL OVER the zinc. Anybody know if there would be a prob using the 2 primers together, with a full cure in between each coat?

I 've used the KL a couple of times this past week or so and was impressed with what it does as far as filling. Coat, sand, coat, sand etc. You got it down pretty good Beebob. I never used the Zinc, so can't say much with that one. I guess if you phosphate, you got the rust thing pretty well covered, right?

I'm pretty sure they want just a partial cure on the Zinc before topcoat, which I would think would be the case for KL over it as well.

If you're referring to the EW Zinc-Rich Primer powder, if you let it fully cure before you apply a second coat, your intercoat adhesion will be compromised and you may end up with failure of the topcoat (flaking or peeling).
