  • Coating a Automatic transmission

Have any of you ever done an auto tranny complete? I told the tranny guy that I would like it with nothing in it and I guess it could be bolted together and I just plug off all the holes and do the dip stick by itself.

It just bugs me on the blasting part and making sure there is nothing left behind? I could make sure its clean and ready and then etch it with an aluminum type etcher?

What do you suggest? And how much outgassing do you think I will have to do?

I priced it at $10,000 and then gave him a discount of around $9,800 so what do you think? $140 housing dip stick $12 tail shaft $20 + pan $20 to $30

I think that's pretty funny right there............
Yep when the caller ID showed the name it did not ring a bell but the voice did. Well as we talked and all came together is when I gave him the price! He just builds them and if he has to, he just spray paints with whatever but he had a customer that was asking about coating them and then the rest is history form there out. I also told him it was to cold to even think about going to my shop to do any work! If I had something to do I would have prepped it yesterday and then did it today. 22 fluorescent bulbs + little heater and I have 50 to 70 before I turn on the oven so not to bad I guess

But one thing for sure is when I give a maybe price I get their attention and then we get down to business

yep I said clean and ready and then he can put it together. I just don't want any media in it so was thinking of using a aluminum etching and just make sure it clean and then coat?

              duke ,

i did do alot of them already . its a pain becuase of all the oil .. but getting them clean is the best . some of the cases i did i did not even blast becuase they where already bare not painted . but i just cleaned them up after being completly stripped . i usually use purple power . let it soak for a bit . wash with hot water . then outgas . check for any dirt grim . if need be i re washed . then re out gassed . and coated .

i have used alumi brite before and it works well but the last time i bought it . probably 5 years ago it was around 25-30.00 a gal . i just use purple power it gets the job done and cheaper .

every case i did had the bushings bearing races removed . some of the bushings may be ok . but i would not chance it as they do have some lead content and can ruin them from the heat .

the few cases i did have to blast i actually covered the valve body area with duct tape and the tail shaft area . the front of the case where the pump goes into i try to cover them up the best i can just to keep sand out . then blasted and did not blast directly at the tape kinda away from it . just to try and avoid that 1 little piece of sand in there ya know ?

its just a very carefull procedure

any questions you know my number

Thanks Ted for the info. What you said was what I hoping to hear. The key is clean and out gassing and hope you can coat without a problem after that I guess? Its not a part that you see much of even with mirrors on the floor for a show unless you have a clear floor pan

                Thanks Again

                  The other thing you can
do if this case is realy dirty is take the case down to your nearest
trans shop and ask them to put it in their parts washer..when i used to do trans work i
had a automatic cabinet washer that i would put all my parts in and they would come out
                  completely clean.then outgas it

I know this is old but
I have the customer take them to a tranny shop
complete tear down, then have the tranny shop hot tank them.
cook out the oil in the oven for an hour
                      blast, pre treat, mask, powder
                      usually about $250 otd
