  • Price check please...

Can you guys give me your thoughts on pricing?

These are Plastic 1/4 scale rims about 4" dia and 2" deep. Will have to sandblast lightly, wipe clean, pre-heat then shoot. Without melting the plastic i cure aprox. 250 for 1/2 hr. Price for a set (4). If all goes well I could get the contract from the guy who makes them. I shot this one and it work out pretty good considering this is my first one. Colors are solids, mirrors and of course alt. Chrome w/clear coat.
    What do you think?

what would you recommend? They have tried spraying the wheels with that fake chrome. Looks nice until they get whacked a few times then they flake off. Rims come in white or flat black.

      What HD said...

If it's not designed to be cure at a low temp like 250, it won't crosslink correctly.

Try throwing a reject in at 400 and see if it will take a normal cure. Make sure you give it plenty of time, and some extra, to make sure you are safe before doing a bunch of them!

You'll have to do some kind of surface prep to get any coating to stick properly - if it's smooth and shiny you will almost always have poor adhesion.

Some kind of sanding or scuffing will most likely be needed to get good adhesion for the topcoat.

Although flat black should be better...

          Re: Price check please...

Jay: I can do that. I did get a old rim up to 300 degrees and nothing happen to it.
I had some mirror black left over from another project so i decided to see if i get it to stick. I did sandblast the rim, then prep. I will use another old rim, crank it up and see what will happen. The guy who make them have tried that fake chrome without success.

Get the minimum cure temps for all the powders you plan on using. I'm not sure if jumping straight to 400 is a good idea if 350-375 will do it. That last 25 degrees could be the melting point, especially if your oven temps are not correct! Hopefully you have more than one "extra" to play with til you get it right!

Yes sir. he sent me about 20 samples to work on and see if i can do it. He thought i could get by at 350 or so but he's not sure as he outsource the rims to a plastic company, he just supplies the mold. The plastic rim is very thick and it looks like its got some kind of fiber melted into it. He does outsource to a place where they put this chrome material on and it looks great until they start peeling off.

Would i cure it at 325/375 longer then say 10 mins? I thought about putting a rim in and crank the heat up until i see the rim deform then i know where my limits is.

Most colors will be mirror, solid and he wants me to try the ultimate chrome.

very good imputs on this item. Always learning

                Re: Price check please...

If you're already good to 300, keep upping your temperature 25 degrees at a time until you find the temp it melts at, then cure at 25 degrees lower. If you can cure at 325 or 350, 20 to 30 minutes should hopefully give you adequate cure. You won't have to worry about overcure at those temps. After you get one done, so some testing on your own to see how they hold up to impact. I agree with Jay, the flat black ones should give your powder a better surface to adhere to if you can get him to supply you with those instead of the white.

you guys are the greatest. Most of his rims is a flat black. White rims is being discontuine, but it still has some to sell. If i get the powder to take and hold up i will request black only. I will do a few this week and i will keep you up to date on what has happen. Hopefully if everything work's out right this should be a nice little job to have.

                  Thanks for the imput
