  • Primary Cover Help??

This guy seen my display at the local Shop. and Brought me a cover today, we didnt do it though cause we seen that the Chrome was bubbling and he didnt want any problems. So hes gonna bring another one Saturday. He even brung a cardboard template to cover the one big hole and the small rectangle hole. Said i could have them.

    On to the ?

    1. Cost To do this In Mirror Black? Its a OEM Powder coated finish from H. Davidson. Guy will strip Powder himself.

    2. Since it was already Powdered from factory Should I outgas to be safe and for how long and what temp.?

    3. I didnt think to check the size but will it fit in a house size oven?

Im open to all Info. This will be my 1st Harley Davidson Part and i want it Perfect like all my sportbike parts come out.

    Thanks Herb

    Re: Primary Cover Help??

First I would want to know exactly how he stripped it.

I have charged between 40 and 60 dollars for an outter primary cover, depending on it being a big twin or a sporty and color choices.

It is exposed to oil all the time. I would not take the chance of having to redo it, if all it cost me was a offgass cycle, I would do it. I would run it at 450 for an hour personally.

Sporty will fit Im pretty sure, I have never tried to put a big twin primary in a regular size oven.

outgas is easy, you run the part through a regular cure cycle, plus some extra time, plus some extra temp.

The extra time and temp is to be sure that nothing will leach out under your new wonderful coating at a regular time and time.... hence the 450 for about an hour (thats what I do anyhow)

                      Re: Primary Cover Help??

in my area i get 80 $ for that cover and 50 if it s chrome plated .
outgasing is a good thing but not a must on those covers as long as the part is really cleaned good.
even if the customer strips the part, i still give it a quick blast .
