  • Masking problems

I am trying to do two tone wheels, but never have masked Rosey's smoke chrome before. I am getting an outline effect at the border of the two powders after full cure. My lines are not exactly consistently clean either I coated silver over the whole wheel, masked, coated again in smoke chrome, flow out, remove tape, full cure.

Has anyone had any luck masking off Rosey's smoke chrome? Also, how thin of tape do you all use for the border? I used 0.120" wide tape. If anyone has any additional advice, let me know. Thanks.

Try pulling the tape after flowout, not fully cure, then put back in the oven and fully cure, this should help lay that line down and give you a sharper line at the same time.

I did that exactly and the wheels in the pic are the product. Either way that doesn't explain the dark line at the border of the two powders. I've done several of these wheels but I have never seen the discoloration.

It could very well be the way the tape affects the metallic in the smoke chrome. What gun are you shooting with? If it's adjustable, try lowering the voltage when you shoot the chrome. It may help with the way the metallic lays on the tape edge.

I carry a gun because I'm too young to die, and too old to take an ass-whoopin'!

That's an Idea. I'm using my Wagner cup gun, I'll lower the voltage tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks.

The problem is that powder in similar to the chrome powders if you peel after flow out it disturbs the surface of the powder leaving those black lines. If you scratch that powder somewhere you will see that the finish is only superficial and it will be black under it. Try peeling the tape before you heat the wheels up and that should solve your problem.

If you pill the tape before curing the powder be very carefull not to disturb the surrounding powder. Also watch for the powder on the back of the tape as it will fall off and ruin your finish. I have used double sided tape for this as it keeps a lot of the powder from falling off of the back of the tape when you peal it off.
