  • What not to use to clean powder coat

Well Guys I could go looking but just maybe one of you has done the leg work already.
What I need and any one else is a list of products that shouldn't be used to keep your powder looking good. Some products work great when diluted. Soap and water is great but brake dust need some extra help!
We need a list of stuff that we can give to our customer so he/she does not come back at us because they screwed up and then blame it on our coating.
I had a young guy come by a week ago and ask about doing his org rims because he was fed up with his new ones! Well his new ones were about $250 each and the dummy went and bought the stuff to clean REAL mag old style wheels and not ones that had a clear on them??? :eekwe use that stuff to etch aluminum with even some of the stores have pulled it from the shelves because I had to go to NAPA to get it) So he messed up real good and I told him he should have checked what was on his wheels and that he could just as easy screw up a new powder coated one also? MUST READ AND UNDER STAND WHAT ONE IS DOING AND ON WHAT would help a lot but all of use has screwed up as we grow up and I will say we will do it aging but not on the same thing twice I hope

OK. So how much can we put together?

And don't just read and go away! Lets gets something to cover our butts OK?
I will add each item to this post as it comes in.

Some damage it caused because the customer didn't read the lable on what not to use it on.
    1. Brake Cleaner
    2. full Strength Purple Power "Any full strength degreasers".
    3. Concrete cleaner
    4. Aluminum Mag wheel cleaner
    5.Acetone
    6.Carb Cleaner
    7.marine clean
8.polishing compounds ( unless clear coated)
    9.
    10.

Some powder is resistant to brake clean, and gasoline......

You have to imagine if the salt spray is a good number, then the more resistant it should be to other items. (King correct me if I am wrong)

Why not tell them WHAT to use, instead of what NOT to use? Mild detergent, and water. Thats all you should use, and all you should need. If it's going to be getting covered in fuel, grease, and oil, no finish is going to hold up because they are going to use something nasty on it to clean it eventually. If a cleaner says it will screw up paint, chances are it will screw up powder as well, just not quite as quickly (usually).

If you are correct about some powders what would you look for so you could choose them? Are all the ones you sell have a link for the data about the salt spray testing? I have only looked for that when reading about the primers mainly.

Epoxies are generally recommended for corrosive areas like battery boxes and underhood parts subject to fuel spray or other chemicals. They are very chemical resistant, but colors are more limited, and they are not UV stable, so a topcoat would be needed if it were exposed to sunlight. Of course then you're back where you started with a regular powder on top of the tough stuff that is going to be affected by whatever you put on it.

Rodney Dangerfield used to put it best. "I went to the doctor, I said 'Doc, it hurts when I do that'."
          He said "Don't do that".
