  • powder over paint

I am new to powder coating and i was wondering if it is possible to use a kandy or transparent powder over top of some airbrushed graffics or if it would ruin the graffics or powder coat , also i was wondering if someone could tell me about the process of laying a base powdercoat and then a kandy powdercoat over it, if some one could help me i would greatly appreciate it that way i dont waste alot of money experimenting thanks!

The paint wont hold up to the cure. At least it did not for me. Been there tried that. Base coat clear coat/ candy coat is shoot as normal with base, cure completely. Let cool. Then shoot clear/ candy, cure completly. Let cool. then your done.

If the paint will take the heat without lifting or distorting you should be fine I would say. What gun are you using so we can help you with your other question.

      Welcome to the forum.

I hear that, what is the right type? Ive tried it twice with horrible results. I was using a acrylic 2 part with thinner.

I did a wagon for my niece in red starlight and then had her name airbrushed on each side in automotive paint. I then cleared over it. It took all the color out of the airbrushing but looked very cool when it was done.

The Testors paint got old brain going It does not say have a thinner in it like you thin down automotive paint and that might help it stand the heat? Acrylic enamel might not take it? lacquer might? but if any of it was thinned you would have to let it set so all the thinner is gone or maybe bake it like they do in a factory and pro paint bays to get rid of it? Not real sure what the temp is off hand but its in the papers you get with the paint. The new base coats also might hold up the same way?

I guess that gives me something to do because I have all the types of paints.

Now I will stop brain function till latter

I would say in my opinion non solvent mixed paints would work with out any problems. Like the model car paint or a pin stripping paint. Laquer paints can have solvent evaporate from them for a long time. This could be an issue. Not one hundred percent but I'm thinking enamel paints will be fine if left a few days. I can't remember how long the reducer evaoprates out. If I remember right, it's quick. I think Urethane paints would be like the enamel ones if left for a few days they probably would work. I know from experience I have resanded laquer paints a couple weeks later and have smelled the thinnier releasing from the paint as I sand.

Hey HD keep Shelly from reading this!

If you take up smoking then you want have the smelling problem sure helps on muff diving

Now lacquer thinner evaporates QUICKER than you can say dag gone so not sure what you smelling but as soon as I can get through screwing off with my new toughbook computer for the shop I will test and see what it does! Its a used CF-28 one. I try to drive over it every day to test it and with the rubber keyboard its a big deal to typ but I pour Rum and coke on it as a test also AWSOME piece of work it is Now quit sniffing the paint for a while

Whens the last time you hand sanded three coats of laquer? I can't count the number of times a have.
