  • Wet black problems

New here , need ideas on what the problem is .

When i use WET BLACK powder , i end up with junk in the finish . I tried useing a powder sugar siffeter to remove the larger chunks out ( hard chunks ,like black sand or something ) . But ,when a spray it on ,it looks good . Soon as the powder starts to flow ,then you can see the trash in it . Looks like sh*t .

    Thanks for any help .

How old is the powder, how do you store it temperature wise? You shouldn't have chunks in your powder unless it's old, bad or stored wrong. Can you post a pic of the part after the cure? It's easier to help if we can see what the problem looks like.

      Welcome to the forum Coldh21xrd300xs!

Is this the only powder you're having problems with? You sure your gun is clean of any other powder that might of been left behind right?

Welcome to the forum. With a bit more info, we should be able to help you pinpoint your problem.

        Best of luck.

          Re: Wet black problems

Powder was new . Didn't even try to store it , used it all in one day(1 lbs) .

Have the cheap gun ,bought from here .

No problems with it sticking ,cures great . Just trashy looking .

Coating square pieces of alumium 17"x 14"x1/8" one side . Coated 20 pcs , not one was useable . Sifted the powder ,then tried again . Next 20 pcs were better ,but still trashy with sand size & smaller junk in it .

Will post a pic later .

          Thanks again ,Mike

Hard tell since it is so black ,the spots is the problems .
No pin holes, just junk floating in the coat .
Cleaning the metal with thinner , no oil is used in the cutting process .Lint free rags ,then blowing any lint etc off with air .
              Thanks,Mike

Left over or stuck lint on the surface doesn't always show on the uncured powder. If you use a wipe of any sort, try to get in the habit of running a propane torch over the part to burn off any micro spots of dust/lint. You know when the fire gets them, they like to do a quick "spark" as they burn!

are you shooting these hanging or flat? If flat you might just be getting dirt. It's amazing how big a tiny spec of dirt looks when you coat over it.Or you might be getting chunks from your gun.

I don't know where you got that powder, but if the specks were fewer after sifting, I'd say the powder is old or possibly "reclaimed". If not reclaimed, then maybe just a bad batch.

                      Re: Wet black problems

Ordered some more Wet black and also Mirror Black .Have alot of stripping to do ,start all over .
I have sprayed the parts flat due to going in the oven ( Cooking stove) .I have tried the torch trick on the last few i did , but no difference .When sifting the powder ,can see the some of the chunks. The chunks are hard like rocks/sand , but i think there is alot going thru the screen .Some of the trash does at times look like it could be lint or dust .

I built a small 10'x10' room in the shop just for powdercoating these parts. Used the shop vac to get any dust, dirt out of the room .

Out of ideas here , thanks guys for all the help .

                        Re: Wet black problems

I had chunks in my black last summer. It turns out since i was storing them in a fridge it was condensating inside the bag and turning into chunks. I sifted and sifted but ended up throwin the whole bag out. Grabbed the next bag and everything was fine. Now I check for solids in the powder.

The propane torch trick works pretty good, too bad it creates condensation if you leave it on there to long.

You shouldn't need to sift new powder. If there are visible chunks of anything in it I would return it and ask for a refund.

we sweep our shop every day, and mop on Fridays, you would be AMAZED at how much dust/dirt get's kicked up off the floor, and floats around for hours... with a charge in the air from your powder gun, dirt floats by, and gets a charge... sucked right on your part.

Both powders have been inspected by our lab tech....no problem was found - light and fluffy
