  • Building my own blasting cabinet... UPDATE page 3

Well I'm back at it again. The urge to build something bigger and better than what I currently have has kicked in again. At the moment this is just an idea, but definitely something I'm interested in pursuing.

Have any of you built a blasting cabinet before?

What do you think about the DIY kits available at places like TP-Tools? http://www.tptools.com/p/336,142_Build- ... ystem.html

This seems like a great deal, for 100-200 bucks depending on window size and gun you can get just about everything you need to build a cabinet.

I have seem some setups where people are using 55 gallon drums (maybe smaller) instead of the V-shaped bottom siphon to feed media into the cabinet. What is the advantage of this over just doing a siphon from within the cabinet? I plan on doing a V-shape anyway, just curious if there's any gain from doing a siphon from an external source instead of within the cabinet.

What would be the best way to go about sealing the cabinet panels? I do not have access to a brake, so I'll be doing individual walls. Using angle iron a skeleton. I can do many spot welds along the seam or just run a bead, throw some caulking on it, then cover it all up with a nice aluminum piece around the edges. Sound like a good plan?

I'm open to any idea, including suggestions on size. I would like to build this in two portions if possible. Cabinet and stand, possibly three if I separate the V-floor from the cabinet. Reason behind this is what I want to be able to powder coat it when it's done. Throw each major component inside the oven and assemble it

Thanks again for any advice or ideas.

Hey Juan can't wait to see what you do! I just built on to mine. What I did was bought one the same as I had and then modified the two so I could attach them together. Now I have syphon and pressure blasting capabilities and a longer cabinet.

This is actually my other option, since it will cost about 200 bucks and it's available locally with a small trip down to HF lol...

Right now it just comes down to pricing. Right after creating this thread I started pricing together everything that comes in the TPTools kit and going with that kit is definitely the way to go. It has pretty much everything except the floor screen, which is between 60-80 bucks depending on size.

Current cabinet is 33 wide, 22 deep, and 14-22 tall. I can basically add another 33 inches in width by adding a second cabinet.

Problem with this is that I still only have 1 cabinet. I would like to have 2 separate cabinets for various reasons. The other issue is the window on the current cabinet. I would really like to have a flat window (vertical view inside the cabinet) rather than the angle where I have to look down into the cabinet. This robs the cabinet of room on the inside and it's pretty uncomfortable during a long period of time.

Concept cabinet will be 60 wide, 30 deep, and close to 36 tall (sill undecided). I'll gain 8 inches in depth, and a ton of height.

Please keep in mind that these posts are usually just my thinking process being typed, so bear with me lol...

I'll be posting some numbers and thoughts here in a few minutes after I figure out how much material is required.

Trust me I know, remember I was with you from the begining on the oven build.
I do mostly motorcycle parts so longer was what I needed for now. But I know how my luck goes It'll end up needing more room before I'm done.

Exactly! That's what I'm always trying to avoid. I'm all about being conservative with my spending but I like staying a couple of steps ahead of the game. We are just now starting to outgrow our blasting cabinet, and I'm starting to see a few large jobs coming down the pipe (large wheels, bike frames, household/industrial items) and I just want to make sure the equipment is available.

Where did you get the sand pot from? Is that the small plastic one available at HF? How does it work? What is the advantage of that over just doing a siphon from the cabinet?

If you are adding a addition light get that at hardware store for $7. As you know Juan I am always comparing prices when I do a project.( AKA cheap )

I would recommend painting the inside walls of the shot, and hopper. 1.To allow blasting media to slide freely on plywood 2. seal the wood.
It does seem like a good value. I'm just curious on how well this will work versus a stand alone pot blaster.

I plan on building the entire thing out of sheet metal, so walls will most likely be powder coated inside and out.

what i am gonna do that is very close to that size is use 2 tall 4 drawer filing cabinents off of craigslist for free, they will be layed flat on a stand and hinged at the back so it can be top loaded and the face will be lexan for the top and sheet metal for the bottom for 4 glove holes kind of like it's smaller brother i built. and here are some plans for a sheetmetal brake i used for my oven build and it works great. http://www.majorleagueduning.com/tech/Brake/Brake.htm

I also have outgrown my blating cabinet. I picked up a 250 gal fuel oil tank a while back that is going to be converted to a blast cabinet. Hope to start on it this spring. Need to look into the Tp Tools kit though.

I have the plans for the metal brake that I built. Got them from a guy that builds airplanes. I modified it some for tighter bends and easier hinges. Airplanes use a slow curve to thier bends, go figure. And I can tell anyone that wants the plans what I did different. Let me know.
