  • Dust!!!

I coated some parts for my motorcycle yesterday. I took every precaution. Blasted, wiped clean, hit with a torch to get rid of fuzzies. The final product has dust in it. Arrrggghhhhhh! I think I'm going to try to knock the bumps down smooth, then do a second coat. Son of a......

Now I'm in trouble. I tried re-coating hot, and ended up looking even worse. Now, theres to layers of powder on there I need to remove. My blaster will do it, but it's pretty slow going. Any short cuts for getting this thing back to bare metal? It's billet aluminum, and I want to maintain some of the surface features, so heavy abrasives aren't an option.

is it thin or pretty thick? If its pretty thick I have had luck using a torch to burn powder off of parts, then light blast. Just be careful of getting the piece to hot!

Chemical stripping does the trick for me. Also before you go in the shop blow your self off to remove any dust from your clothing. I also wear a disposable paint coveralls and over boots when I am in my coating room. You will need to keep your powder booth, oven, and area around them very clean. Also don't sweep the floor vacuum or mop so you don't get the dust air borne. Good luck!

              Re: Dust!!!

Normally you guys would be right to suggest some shop cleaning. But in this case, my oven is clean. I think I must have just knocked some dust off of something when moving from my "booth" to my oven. I figure it must have been a fluke as I've not had dust problems before.

What chemical strippers have you guys had luck with? I'd prefer something I can buy locally as opposed to something I'd have to order. Does Aircraft stripper work as well on powder as it does on paint?

Yes it does. It will probably take some elbow grease. If you don't have enough liquid stripper to submerge the piece it, I'd go for the gel-type that you can apply all over the part, then wrap it in plastic so it doesn't dry. Let it work awhile then it should easily scrape or brush off.

It works well, but not as good as it does on paint. I would hit up the part to just over 100 degrees and apply the gel. Let it sit there for a few minutes and let it do it's job. This will only get you so far, it will remove a lot of layers until the very last one, then it just kind of sits there. You'll have to try to blast whatever comes off and sand off anything that's left over. Most of it should come off relatively easy. At least that's been my experience...

If you happen to have a Sherwin Williams in your area, get the Super Stripper (I think that's what it is called) around $19 to $23 for a gal. Beats anything I've used in the past, even that sucky Aircraft stripper.

I have had good luck with plastic abrasive on smaller pieces. It will peel powder off and not harm the substrate but it does mean standing in front of the blast cabinet. Anything much bigger than a sheet of paper and I'd let the powder strippers do it.
