  • Best Advice To Give On Dirt Bike Rim ?

I Had a lady call and her husband wants his chrome dirt bike wheels done in black. So I gave her a price. Then she ask how durable powder was and I told that it's was one of the most durable on the market and holds up real well for most wheels that are mainly used on the streets but as far as it holding up as well as chrome on a dirt bike would be a hard call. It all depends on what he likes to do and where he like to do it at I guess? If he likes to play in mud like normal mud or sandy mud then the finish is not going to hold up well and even the chrome over time will start to show the abuse but not as quick as powder would.

This area I live in is mainly sandy type soil + living close to the coast and salt water also. I like to make a buck when I can but also don't want a customer to come back complaining because it didn't hold up.

If he decides he wants them done any way, have you got any suggestions so it might just hold up a little better than normal for this use? They could be taken to the chrome shop and have them dipped and remove the chrome down to the nickle or copper so the powder could get a better bite? I know that want help the ware of the powder but would help the staying power of it!

All my skid plate's on my quad have been done since 05, I ride HARD , and all the wear and scratches are below the surface of the substrate.
We do a ton of atv, dirt bike parts, never had a complaint.
I would suggest completely disassembling the wheel however.

I do lots of parts including wheels on racing quads too. A good blasting and make sure the substrate is perfectly clean before coating, and you'll have no problems. Like Streetwerkz says, those guys ride hard and it holds up well. No need to remove the chrome. Give it a nice blast profile and you're good to go as long as the chrome isn't flaking.

There's nothing wrong with admitting that PC'ing isn't bullet proof. You should only have to worry about it peeling or cracking from your application problems. Neglect or abuse isn't something you should warranty. I would state in writing on a recepit though, you know how people get these days

            Hey Duke

If you only blast the chrome run it through a cure cycle first to make sure it wont blister..........and if it has spokes i would have it unlaced.

I dought his wheels are chrome plated, unless he is riding a bike from the 70s. Almost all dirt bike wheels are clear anodized aluminum, i know this because that is basically all i do, just blast and clean real good and you will have no problems with them holding up.All the wheels i have done have last as long as 4 years (personal bike), and that is in hard motocross racing every weekend 35 weeks out of the year.

I think she did say it was a fairly new bike. Not being around bikes like that all I have to go with is what the person tells me unless I see it my self then I should spot it. She said the wheels looked great but he just wants them black.
Thanks a lot for the information.
