  • Anybody coated stock fourwheeler a-arms?

I've seen some people coat stock fourwheeler a-arms. I tried once with a spare one I had but all the grease in the ball joint ran out and turned hard like plastic. (you can't remove the ball joint on many stock a-arms) Any ideas on how to do this?

you reaaly can't because of that same issue you are having.even if you pop the boot off and clean the joint out spotless you would have to regrease and install the boot back into place.i stay away from stockers.only after market.....

Depends on the brand I guess. I would go along with the opinion that if the ball joints can't be removed, I wouldn't do them. If they can be removed, not a problem. These are all stock arms with the ball joints removed, but not sure what machine they are from.

I try to stay away from stock a arms too. I did do i set for a friend of mine after he got aftermarket ones, i cleaned the joint real good and taped the whole joint off and they came out perfect, the grease that came out of the joint formed a "plastic ring" right at the base of the shaft and i just fished it out with a pick and repacked and they were good as new, he runs them in the winter when he takes all his long travel stuff off and hasnt had any problems.

Are you sure thats grease you guys are seeing? It may be a teflon coating on the ball joint wear surfaces like they use on the bushings in shifter pedals and stuff. I've done those shifters and it looks like a clean bronze bushing, but after they come out of the oven, the plastic has oozed out onto the surface and you have to sand it smooth so it fits on the shaft again. Some sort of impregnated anti-wear stuff. I've had shift linkages with the ball swivels that actually use a nylon socket melt solid on me too. More things to watch for.

you're correct, i'm pretty sure banshee a-arms and possibly others have "plastic" in the joint. so if the joint is still tight when you're done, it probably won't last long. i was gonna mention that in my earlier post, but forgot. sorry

I have done quite a few stock a-arms, and haven't run into any that don't pop out yet. Most of them are pressed in, and I am fortunate enough to have a motorsports shop 10 miles down the road with a press to take them out.... Maybe I am just lucky I havent run into any that aren't removable...

Yeah banshee ball joints are not removable and have the plastic in them. I think you could probably do it using an IR lamp and covering the ball joint with alum. foil. Or if your fortunate enough to have one of those Ziom units. I just got a new set of extended arms for the banshee, I think some r&d is in store.

OK. Thanks for all the replies. Glad to know before I messed up some that weren't mine.
