  • What happened here??

I have a gentleman I talk to on a hot rod forum from Fla. (I'm in Ohio)
He had a frame powder coated, with a clear, and the clear is peeling off.
I have never had this problem, but it looks like maybe been over cured between coats.
I feel bad for the guy and would like to give him as much info as possible.
the place in Fla is going to fix it, and says they think it a bad batch of clear (could be)

The only thing I'm so so about is the powder coater in Fla want to just put black back on there with no clear, which I don't agree with.

Enough with the back ground info, the problem is no inter coat adhesion, what are possible causes, and solutions for the re coat?
by the way this is Tiger powders, I do not know what part numbers

That wheel needs to be stripped and re-painted....I would recommend using Sd Wet Black one step for Florida due to the 3000 hours salt spray resistance and the 1000 of UV protection

Yeah, I told him strip the frame down, and start from scratch, which sux because I guided him step by step on how to use epo strong, and the fill work on the frame was wonderful, so not to add insult to injury, he has to have the frame stripped, refinish all the body werk, then have the coater re powder everything, which in this case is an entire hot rod frame, and complete suspension

He's the nicest guy in the world, I feel so bad for him

              Re: What happened here??

It could be that the base coat black will not allow the clear to adhere

Maybe they did a full cure on a gloss base coat, and the clear could not cross link?

how much are you suppose to cure base coats when you're putting a clear over them?

Since i never cleared anything glossy I take it that your not supposed to fully cure the gloss base?

                      Re: What happened here??

The base coat does not need to crosslink to the topcoat...this can be very dangerous due to the fact that most coaters use powders from different suppliers

                        Re: What happened here??

As far as I have have ever been told, and have been doing it this way for 5 yrs.... so I hope it's correct, is
base color for 1/2 the cure cycle, then apply top coat, cure for full cure time, at metal temp.

I have never cleared over a glossy color, guess I assume there would not be adequate adhesion with all the gloss additives in the powder.
but then again if the 2 color flow out together, I guess they would get good inter coat adhesion, maybe? I don't know just a guess... I could be wrong

                          Re: What happened here??

hmm when I got here and asked that I thought everyone said always full cure then recoat and full cure that. It makes sense to me since, like theking said, different suppliers, different powders, who knows what they do when they react together. There is some heavy chemical stuff goin on as this stuff bakes that I sure don't understand.

Of course, what works works so...

I was told as long as you get it past flow out, your golden.
Yes even though they all say not to, I have mixed just about brand that way for year, with no problems

you know i bet theking knows someone who could actually explain what happens chemically when this stuff gets baked. I would love to know some more about that. I mean flow out is a pretty obvious thing, but what is it I don't think the chemical reaction has really started up at flow out but I could totally be wrong. I guess I was assuming (ass/u/me) that there was some gas exchange or something until cure was completed so if you coated over it, things wouldn't be right.
