  • Learned something about the dormant blue!

I starting doing some of my own stuff today for my vintage race bike. One of the parts I started with is the rims. I decided to give the dormant blue. After I coated the blue I decided it would be cool to coat the lips in sun gold. I finally got a good line when I removed the tape and looked like they were going to come out great. After fully curing the cold I applied the clear and low and behold, no more gold, only dormant blue. I guess I should have had the gold lip idea from the start. At least it was my own parts. The picture is the finished product. The picture shows blue but in person it is more o a purple, even at different angles and light.

I had something very similar happen! I coated some parts in dormant green (aka granny smith green). Then we decided to go with gold instead. I figured since I had just coated them I could shoot gold over them and some clear. Sure enough as soon as I shot clear over the gold, that green came right back and shows through the gold!

You've stumbled onto the secret of dormants. The dyes are actually designed to bleed into the topcoat, usually a clear. Since golds have a very high clear content, the dyes simply overpowered the gold pigments.

haha I used some cw dormant electric blue sparkle and noticed how the color comes right out into the clear. Dormants are neat

Could you do that by doing the line last and just tape it for the dormant and then again for the clear? or is that just not happening w a dormant?

if you put teh gold down, then tape it off and apply the dormant. then clear the lot it should keep it as gold.

i've done a few dormant reds, with polished letters, then cleared the lot, the dye doesnt bleed into the lettering at all.
