  • Too close to the elements

I built a rack to hold four rims in my 3x3x6 oven. After clearing the rims I noticed the two hanging on the bottom lightly tinted the clear, brown. I know this means they got to hot but my question is can I put a peice of sheet metal between the elements and the rims to deflect the heat so this doesn't happen again? Or should I just cure three at a time centering one on the bottom and two on the top?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

I ran into similar issues when I only had my smaller oven and tried to stuff a couple of pieces in there that hung too low. Now I do just that, I keep a small piece of 20 gauge sheet metal in there to deflect some of the heat. You just gotta make sure it doesn't rob the part of any heat. I've had good luck so far, just gotta play with the piece of metal so it doesn't completely cover the element.

In the specific case of wheels though, I usually do them in pairs. That works well for me.

I put a piece of fire brick or tile right below the piece just in case,

you should shield your elements. the heat radiating to your parts that are in close proximenty to the elements will become hotter than the other parts further away. Its just like sitting to close to the campfire- sit to close and you get to hot. you could mount a piece of sheetmetal on your rack to deflect the direct radiating heat from the elements so any low hanging objects would not get to hot but would heat up through the convection of hot air in the oven. hoped this helped

It's hard to tell from the pics. But if that oven is square inside why not turn the rack sideways so the rims are further away from your elements? I would still put a diffusor of some sort over those elements anyway. Nice oven by the way!I'm still working on mine.Someday, soon I hope.

tr4dude thats what I was thinking but I didn't know if I would still have a problem.

Shawn if I turn the rack sideways it would be dificult to load the rims as I get them coated. Great points though thanks. I am going to look a second time at that.

Harley, looks like you have a ton of room above the rims. Why not shorten your hanging rods and adjust your cross bar upwards?

I had a pair of wheels that were perfect, except they got a bit scorched by the elements. Solved that problem with shields over the elements and they are staying there. Don't want to have to re-coat anymore stuff for that reason again.
