  • why does silver explosion act like clear starlight?

I just sprayed this powder for the second time and you can see the substrate plain as day. It looks just like clear starlight? WTF? I sprayed a swatch, and an actual part today and on both items the substrate can be seen. But both are nice and flat, its not a lack of powder....

When I look at the clear starlight sample next to this silver explosion I see no difference. Could the bag have been mislabeled? Its a slightly offer white than my container of clear starlight.

And to make matters worse I tried to put a OSU orange on top on it and tried 5 times (1/2 lb of powder) to get the powder to stick. I tried higher kv, then lower, then hot flock, then heat the problem areas with a torch to 125. Nothing worked. It hates me cause I suck at life I guess. I packed it in for the day cause it pissed me off.

    Thanks
    Rob

I've shot it and noticed the "transparency" of it, also. If the substrate is not an even color through out, it will show the different toned areas. I haven't had any problems...yet!...with candies or clear sticking to it.

Yea I'm definitely not on crack. I'll only use this over some kind of quality substrate. It sucks I had to find this out the hard way. It ruined a previous job as I shot it over mild steel. The candy gold top coat turned almost carmel color. This time I sprayed it on a cadnium plated pulley. Its more gold than silver

Re: why does silver explosion act like clear starlight?

I Shot the candy coat at as low my "ebay" gun would go, in other words around 15-20 kv on the indicator. I tried it higher and lower. Neither worked.

I just hot flocked the OSU orange on it today and it came out ok. Yesterday I warmed it to about 110 and it wouldn't stick. Today I heated it to about 145 and shot it. Took two coats for even coverage.

Now that I type this I realized that Since I sprayed an oil pump housing and a acc. pulley in silver explosion yesterday... I went to coat the pulley today and powder would actually repel from it. Again, shooting at as low a kv as I could. Then I decided that I would shoot antique silver over it instead to cover the gold showing. I shot that at the recommended 60-90 and that was no better, tunred it down... no better. I even ground down to bare metal to ensure I had a good ground. Nothing...

I think this powders gonna go in the garbage. I don't have time to mess with problems like this. I'll have to use an alternative powder like bose silver.

        Thanks
        Rob

I had the same problem with silver explosion. It is transparent for some reason, just like clear starlight. I had to opt for silver sparkle to do one of my jobs because of it.

i have shot silver explosion and in my experience you have to go heavy when spraying it to get it to cover without being able to "see through "it. also i "pump up "the air pressure a little because it seems to be a little on the heavy side as far as the actual weight of the powder (maybe because of the metal in it?).

Re: why does silver explosion act like clear starlight?

I noticed the transparency when I shot over some KL Primer, ended up with a sparkle pink. Now I usually put a base coat of standard silver and shoot the silver explosion on top of that, turns out great.

Sorry, I meant the silver explosion. Did you skake up the bag of powder real well before using it?
20kv for the silver explosion base.

I like the idea of putting a standard silver down first. I got 2lbs I need to use up.

I'm curiuous, what did you do to solve the second coat from not sticking?

Hot flocked it hotter, this time around 140-150 And did two candy coats to cover of the blotchyness of the 1st coat.

Re: why does silver explosion act like clear starlight?

We have been having the same problem with Silver Explosion (I post some pictures in the "what am I doing wrong thread" a month or so ago). We shot it again last night and are still having the same issue - it looks somewhat transparent (not as bad as before, but still not right). Since we did it over the KL, that is a little bit of an issue as it now looks somewhat pink.

Can someone post what KVs should be and what the air pressure should be?
We are using the "other" gun.

                      Thanks!

I'm glad to hear that I'm not an idiot and shooting this poorly...

I'll only shooth this over a polished surface like chrome or aluminum from now on. The second coat problem I'll over come by hot flocking it to death One this stuff is gone, i won't be using it again until the problem is resolved. I'll find another powder here that will suit my needs instead, like bose silver. Or just offer a clear starlight instead.

Re: why does silver explosion act like clear starlight?

We are sorry to hear about the problems with the Silver Explosion. I have just spoke with the manufacturer of this product and this is what they have to say. The Silver explosion is a base clear with metallic content within the powder. This product will change color when applied over different substrates, so when applied over the KL Primer, it will show the pinkish color. This product can be applied thicker, to help eliminate the transparent effect. One procedure current customers are doing, that we just now found out about, is applying a lighter basecoat down before applying the Silver Explosion (Ex: a light gray primer). We are very sorry that we haven't realized or known about this sooner. I'm having the manufacturer's lab spray a panel right now starting from .5 mils going up to 5 mils to see how dramatic of a difference there is. Also when applying this powder you should be around 35-40kv's, however all guns will function/perform different and this is just a starting point. Please let us know if we can help in any other way possible.

Thank you for all your help and feedback, it helps us grow and improve our service.
