Well, another set of wheels from hell today. Picked them up and the guy wants these 4 aluminum wheels sandblasted and clearcoated. He said he wanted the "rough" look. I told him the clear would just smooth them out and they'd be whatever ugly gray the blasting would turn them. Oh well, thats what he wanted, and he wouldn't take "no" for an answer. I took them and blasted one, decided to clear it just to have him look at one before I did them all, because sure as heck, they turned just shiny ugly gray. He hated it too, so I suggested a matte clear instead of the gloss. The store closed in an hour, I said I'd shoot a quick coat of matte clear and have it back for him to look at before they closed. Got back to my shop, opened the box of new powder I had just gotten (assorted whites and clears of varying gloss levels), grabbed the matte clear (I thought) and proceeded to shoot the wheel. Into the oven it goes with time to spare. I'll have it out and cool so I can deliver it before they close. As I'm cleaning out my gun and dumping the cup back into the bag, I'm staring at the label.....MATTE WHITE!!!!
Crap! I pulled it out of the oven right away, but just my luck it had already flowed out. Clear and white look identical in the bag, and look the same as it's going on, so I never noticed. So now that wheel is in the stripper tank, and I had to call the guy and tell him he won't have a wheel to look at until Monday. Some days, it just doesn't pay to get out of bed. Sheesh! It certainly doesn't pay to rush. Thats when I always make a mistake.
