yes, they're the same. you can use a membrane and run the air in the bottom. this is much simpler and so far i'm getting the desired results. thanks for the compliments but i'm by no means the first person to do this. i just videoed it so people could see if this mod was for them or not.

Great stuff I liked the vids very informative. Tell me which hose goes all the way to the bottom? I have a Caswell gun I might try that on.

when you're using the gun, the one that's closest to you goes to the bottom of the container. it's the one that's short with the one little hole in the side.

I did the same thing with my EW. Yes it did work better. I think the reason it does is you have made more volume. EW gun says fill the cup 1/3 full. At what point while flowing do you loose consistancy? Its a really cool thing when you can do something like that and get better results. This is what I think makes a good powder coater. A person can learn how powder is flowed and how it works. JMO, a better example is pump hydraulics (water in motion). You are simply creating a draft. Like siphoning, lowering atomspheric pressure. You can buy a fluid bed with a membrane on ebay for 50 bucks, made for powder coating fishing lures. They work great. You here everybody say this about powder coating, "where ever your imagination will carry you", Nice work on the parts too.

That looks like it sprays better than my JP80T gun. Nice work

OK here is my attempt...I have to wait for the silicon to dry to test it still...

Posted this in another thread - thought I was here. I'll leave it in the other one since it's still relevant there too....

What is the advantage of a pump over a vacuum system? Looking at both the true hopper and the one built for the hobby gun... If both have a membrane with metered air from the bottom they both basically suck the powder out of the container, right? Doesn't that make it a true fluidized hopper?
I was thinking on the design. With air from the bottom through the membrane you'd get a nice fluffy container of powder. Pull the trigger and the gun would shoot extra air to the hopper to offset what was being vacuumed out creating a good powder flow. At least that's how it looks in my head. I may have to order a membrane to play with. How durable are the membranes?

Re: Hopper for Harbor Freight gun Pics/Video

with the hopper i built, i have only found one downside. with really heavy powders you have to raise your regulator pressure a good bit when the powder level gets to about 1.5" in the bottom. that's under 1/2 pound powder left. i will probably spend another 5 bucks/5 minutes and make a skinnier, taller hopper. this will be just so if i get in a jam and i need to use that last 1/2 pound powder. the following is my opinion, and that may change with time. i prefer this method because it is so simple, there is no wasted time getting it set right. if you build it like stated, it should perform as stated. there aren't any adjustments to fool with, only the regulator on the gun. i'm not sure why people get so upset that this works so good. i don't knock people with they're membrane hoppers and powder pumps. i just found something that works well for me without going that route. now let's go powder coat something!

Whoa, not sure who you're talking too but I'm just throwing suggestions out there that seem to make sense. As for your 1/2# problem, Nola's idea might not be a bad idea. I think it needs a ton more holes but it'll help mix that powder around more.

Yea I didn't get to test mine out today...i had to get some stuff done and I didn't have time to run and get the single fitting that I forgot

I was thinking more holes would be better. I left a tiny opening at the end of the copper pipe so that it will get a little spin going on too which I am thinking should fluff the powder up nicely.

OK I finally got to test this thing out on my gun. best mod ever! I have to fiddle w the pressure some to get the flow rate right, but I just shot a piece at about 20psi and it put off a beautiful cloud but it was to much to fast so I need to bring that down some. No spits, no chunks perfect mist of color and my attraction seemed much nicer too, not sure if that was because the mist was finer or just my imagination but that was just astounding.

old post but very interesting read!

I picked up a HF gun today because my Pro gun stopped working all of a sudden and I needed another gun quick. Poor clouds, inconsistent air flow, and having to shake the hell out of it isn't cutting it. I'll be heading to Lowe's in the morning and try to piece something together.

                                thanks red!
