Review on new oven from Ted's Fab...finally (Long read, sorr
Ok, here it is. Hopefully it answers the questions that most would ask.
Review of new oven from Ted’s Fabrication
Model: 4’x4’x6’ Base Oven
a. (2) 2,700 Watt heating elements
b. PID Digital Temperature Controller & relay with Toggle On/Off switch
c. 240-Volt Single Phase, 40 Amp circuit required
d. 40 Amp power cord included (no end –plug for range outlet must be added or tie directly into disconnect)
Optional accessories added:
(1) 1’ to Base height (total 78” interior height)
(2) Viewing window in door
(3) additional 2,700 Watt heating element
(4) 240-Volt Single Phase, 60 Amp circuit required (due to extra heating element) 60 Amp power cord included (no end – tie directly into disconnect)
My oven was ordered without any internal racking or trolley. I would have definitely added that in retrospect. I will be adding it myself, but when time allows because getting a large heavy part hung in the middle of the oven with the walls and floor at full temperature can be very challenging and hard on shoes! I will also be adding a light inside. The oven itself is well-built, on wheels that allow it to be rolled around easily. The unit is fully sheeted with welded box and door frame. Door hinges and latches are also welded so they can’t sag. I would have liked a slightly heavier sheeting on the floor because it flexes too much when you have to walk inside (which I don’t do when it’s hot for obvious reasons). I will probably add a thicker floor. Insulation is the full 4” wall thickness. It does get hot to the touch after being on for awhile, but in reality, it doesn’t radiate any more heat than my smaller convection oven.
I did not order mine with a light, vent, or circulating fan, and although I will probably be adding those features myself at some point, I’m not sure how much of an improvement a vent, or circulating fan would make. It is hard to tell if there are any hot spots or temperature inconsistencies, but I assume if I were to hang anything near the elements, there would certainly be a tendency for overheating. I have done a quad frame and dirt bike frame in the oven, and both appeared to heat evenly from top to bottom and flow at both ends evenly without a circulating fan. I have to say that without a fan, I have noticed fewer defects from dirt specs showing up in my work so even if I add one, I will wire it with the option of turning it off if I want. I also plan on shrouding the heating elements to prevent any excessive hot spots.
After connecting the cord to my 60-amp circuit, I put the PID controller through its “learning” program mode which takes the temperature you set and goes in graduated intervals above and below that set temperature until it “learns” how fast the oven heats and cools and then optimizes its operation based on that information to hold a constant temperature the most efficiently without cycling excessively. After going through the “learning” cycle, the oven heats from room temperature to 400 degrees F in less than 20 minutes. In my opinion with the extra foot of height, 2 elements would take too long to recover after opening the door so I’m glad I made that upgrade. When set to 400 degrees, it will cool to around 200 very quickly when you open the door fully to load it, but then will recover to 400 in about 10 minutes or so. Easy to set and operate (even if you don’t understand how to program it).
Ted’s workmanship is very good, he is prompt, always returns calls and answers questions in a very timely manner, and has an excellent product for the price. He is also very accommodating on changes and additions as long as you give him a enough notice ahead of time. It’s not a Steelman commercial oven, but at 1/5 the price, a good unit that will more than suffice for a serious hobbiest or someone getting started in the powdercoating business. I would highly recommend one of Ted’s ovens to anyone considering building their own. I received my oven within 30 days of placing the order, including shipping time.
