  • EW PRO GUN OWNER'S AND PAST OWNER'S (Please Chime in)

OK lets get HONEST opinions with this subject manner. We are not on the EW forum so you do not have to be biased.

Please do the KISS method : KISS= Keep It Stupid Simple

    Format:

How much did you buy the gun for?

Was it new or used or refurbished?

Why did you buy the gun?

Were you happy with the overall performance?

Pro's and Con's of the gun?

Would you recommend it to others?

Did you have any issues shooting cold 2nd coats?

If you were buying a gun all over again what gun would you buy now?

    @$700,

new, I have exchanged it once ( for free ) for a diff one due to trigger probs,

    upgrade from EW hobby gun,

yes until I tried to do cold 2nd coats,

Pro...fast color change and clean up..semi adjustable kv..decent even powder coverage..lightweight..can hold the parts while shooting without getting SHOCKED!

Cons...small kv adjust range..NO amp adjustment..No real powder quantity adjustment..prob with replacement parts..powder cloud varies with amount of powder in the cup and changes with angle of gun..burps powder unless you shake out excess OFTEN..have to refill cup when doing bigger parts..fluidizing needs to be better,

yes as a first gun or backup gun, first coats or hot flocking only, NOT if you'll be doing COLD multi coats,

partial sticking at BEST with cold 2nds but NEVER had complete coverage cold,

PBTP's version of the Gema copy due to price, quick and easy color changes and cleanup and seems to do everything, but you would have to refill often for big jobs. So far gun reviews seem to be positive.

Re: EW PRO GUN OWNER'S AND PAST OWNER'S (Please Chime in)

        Paid $550

I bought the refurb gun and it didn't work (powder would never stick) so I sent it back right away and they gave me a brand new one for the same price.

I mostly bought it because everyone said the color changes were much quicker than the EW hobby gun, and better on second coats.

Honestly I liked the EW hobby gun better performance-wise. I hated changing colors with the hobby gun and the stupid trigger/button that required 2 hands, but it performed better than the Pro gun and did second coats just as good as the Pro (for me it did anyway, I think I got a freak hobby gun or something).

Pro's - the only pro for me was that it has easier color changes

Con's - horrible powder cloud, you can tip the gun back just barely and it just spews powder like crazy, and the powder volume changes with the amount in the cup. It also seems to have it's gremilins - for me sometimes I'll start coating a part with no problems then half way through the powder completely stops sticking the part and I have not changed a thing. The cups for it seem to keep a static charge and it's always very hard to blow the powder out of the cup because it sticks to it (the hobby gun was not like this at all, must have been different plastic or something.

I would not recommend it to anyone - not worth the extra $400+ over the EW hobby gun. Although, I know my opinion is a little bit different because I don't know of anyone else who could do 2nd or 3rd coats cold with a EW hobby gun, or the EW Pro gun - I have done 4 coats cold with both the hobby and Pro gun - I guess I just got super lucky!

If I were starting over again, I would probably buy one of the Chinese guns or save for a Wagner.

599$ Brand new from EW back in Feb.

Had the Caswell gun before that, kept messing up, so we decided to upgrade.

We were happy with the initial performance of the gun, until it broke after 2 monthes of use. EW did give us another pretty fast but that broke again after a month.

The gun is very easy to use, clean and maintain but for 600$ we expected it to last.

We only got it to shoot a 2nd coat cold once, and those results weren't great, so after that we did all 2nd coats hot. Worked fine doing it that way.

If the China gun was available through PBTP back then, I would have gotten that over the EW gun I think. Similar in price but you get more flexiblity w/ the China gun I think then the EW Pro. But if you're just doing it as a hobby and not running a business with it, the EW gun is pretty good and if it does break, they replace it. Can't really argue with that.

ALL CAPS FOR CLARITY ONLY - I'M NOT YELLING........

FIRST, YOU CAN POST THIS QUESTION ON THE EW FORUM TOO - WHY DO YOU THINK THAT FORUM (OR THIS ONE) EXISTS IN THE FIRST PLACE? IT'S A BUSINESS TOOL. AND THAT'S ALL IT IS. IT'S A MEDIUM FOR THE RESPECTIVE COMPANIES TO HAVE THE EYES, EARS *AND* VOICE OF THEIR CUSTOMERS. THINK ABOUT WHAT IT WOULD MEAN TO YOUR BUSINESS TO HAVE A "POWDER-COATING-PROS" FORUM THAT ONLY YOUR CUSTOMERS VOICED THEIR OPINIONS ABOUT *YOUR* WORK.

How much did you buy the gun for?

            I GOT MINE FOR $300

Was it new or used or refurbished?

USED, FROM ANOTHER PRO COATER IN MY AREA. HE HAD A WAGNER HOPPER GUN AND SAYS HE NEVER EVEN USED THE EW GUN. IT WAS 3 YEARS OLD, WHEN I GOT IT 2 YEARS AGO.

Why did you buy the gun?

BECAUSE MY EW HOBBY GUN JUST WASN'T KEEPING UP. BUSINESS WAS REALLY STARTING TO PICK UP AND I NEEDED SOMETHING MORE. THE HOBBY GUN WAS A P.I.T.A. TO CLEAN - EVEN WITH THE TUBES REMOVED & THE TAPE SEAL CUT TO REMOVE THE BARREL.

Were you happy with the overall performance?

YES, I USED IT UP UNTIL A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO WHEN I BOUGHT THE PBtP EZ 35 GUN (WHICH SEEMS TO BE OFF THE MARKET RIGHT NOW FOR VARIOUS REASONS). I DID MODIFY THE EZ GUN TO ACCEPT THE EW PRO CUPS (SINCE I'M WAREHOUSING THESE THINGS LATELY), AND I USE THE EW PRO GUN FOR CLEAR COATING ONLY NOW. THE HOBBY GUN IS SETTING IN A CABINET WAITING TO BE SOLD WITH A COUPLE OF OVENS AND MAYBE A BLAST CABINET SOON.

Pro's and Con's of the gun?

THE BIGGEST PRO FOR ME WAS THE QUICK COLOR CHANGE - I SWAP COLORS ALL DAY LONG AND I REALLY WISH WAGNER WOULD BUILD A SIMILAR CUP GUN WITH THE $4K FEATURES. I DON'T KNOW WHY WE DON'T HAVE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS ON THE MARKET YET? YEAH, WAGNER HAS A CUP GUN, BUT IT'S A GRAVITY FEED - I DON'T THINK THAT'S THE WAY IT SHOULD BE.

THE BIGGEST CON - NONE REALLY. THE GUN I HAVE WILL SHOOT COLD 2ND/3RD COATS WITH LITTLE TO NO PROBLEMS - MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE IT IS SO OLD AND THE GUN WAS BETTER 5 YEARS AGO??

Would you recommend it to others?

            YES

Did you have any issues shooting cold 2nd coats?

MOSTLY NO. SOMETIMES, WITH *SOME* POWDERS, YES

If you were buying a gun all over again what gun would you buy now?
IF I HAD THE CASH IN HAND, I'D GET A $4K GUN AND JUST BE DONE WITH IT - IT REALLY DOES MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE.

Yep, I'm with ya! If I had the money! Some of the guys on these forums (not naming and names) get a little cocky and almost "rebuke" us for even considering these lowly hobby guns or ebay chinese guns, but not everybody has 4 g's to fork out for a powder gun!

Re: EW PRO GUN OWNER'S AND PAST OWNER'S (Please Chime in)

I got mine for 450 (with a 10% discount) as a referb. Going from a POS harbor freight gun it was awesome!

I loved how easy it was to clean and I loved using the cups it made everything easier IMO.

I wanted to keep it, but I needed the cash so down the road it went.

After having the ebay gun now I realize it didn't have much power. And the ebay gun lays down the powder better too. Now if I only had time to finish building my new powder booth and get a good earth ground maybe I could do some second coats with out hot flocking

With the prices of the gema knockoffs around the same price as a new EW pro, No I wouldn't waste my time or money on one. If they were 250-350 I would say yes.
