Those are powder coated along with the pulley. We blast them off but it can take a little time and you need a strong blaster. I would suggest chemical stripping.

Thanks. If I chemically strip them will the edges have to be polished back up or will the stripper not hurt them to bad to where light cleaning will do. He wants them pretty much the same only a different black. I use PBTP Cybersolv for my stripper.

Guess I should of said i have apressure blaster i probably didn't give it much of a chance so if you think blasting is the best way I'll go to work on them.

If you need to leave the lips polished the I would definately suggest chemically stripping them. They will need a light polishing to get the "pop" back.

same here , if you want to keep the edges like original go with the chemical stripper, depending on the stripper used at best it won t affect the finish on the edge and at worse a light polishing will be needed .
note ; the oem finish on these is not relly polished it is a machined finish ,if you want a close match to the oem. after stripping and cleaning go over the machined surfaces with a scotch bright pad (the tan color pad is the closest one )always in the same direction to make sure all the lines follow the original lines

Ookay after two days plus hours in the cybersolv tank and that black stuff won't come off. It turns to a rubbery like crap and as it dries it rehardens. The blaster barely budges it. Any ideas??? I need to get this done and back to the guy. His bike is on a jack at a shop.

Take a non-metallic scraper (so you don't scratch the soft metal) and when it is gooey, scrape as much off as possible off, or at least open up a lot of spots to bare metal and put it back in the tank. This will give the chemicals a chance to get under the powder .

Sorry, I didn't see this post before you started to strip those wheels. I did a pair of those and just scuffed up the finish on them, cleaned and shot them. They came out fine. I don't know what specific powder they used on them from the factory, but its tough stuff.

Maybe if you just talked to them with that sexy voice the powder would jump off for you

This may not be the most popular reply, but I say why strip them ? It's black powder to begin with, you're going back w/ another black, blast cabinet wont touch it. My decision would be to coat over it and I have on almost the same wheels. KL primed right over them followed w/ SD wet black, no problem. After lightly blasting them in my cabinet and seeing no ill effects I ran them through a heat cycle to confirm the finish. That's all I needed to see. Again, not everyone will agree w/ doing this, but these factory finishes alot of the time are pretty darn solid. I hate beating myself over the head trying to get factory powder off.
I know you've already gone the strip route and it's too late for this option, but I just thought I would say what I would do. At this point I would have them com. blasted. Good luck w/ them anyway Harley, I hope they turn out great for you.

After posting I see Dusty said the same thing so it's all double speak.........
