I know there are color sanding rules with auto paint. Like candies and what not. Just curious if the same rules apply to powder.... I have a customer that wants a paint like finish using chrome and a clear on a motorcycle tank. In my mind it needs to be wet sanded before applying the clear, but I know its a metallic and shouldn't be. Just curious.

are you saying a chrome powder then a clear or a real chrome plating with a candy and then a clear.
if it s a chrome powder you won t be able to sand it . i tried it and it turns from bright silver chrome to a dark charcoal ugly looking color
correct baz, if i understand right. the chrome powders have micron sized pieces of aluminum that come to the surface when the powder flows out. that's where the chrome look comes from. any sanding will most likely destroy that layer.
Don't overdo the thickness on the chrome powder and you'll be fine. Apply a good (but not too heavy) layer of clear, and maybe a second one and you can wet-sand and buff the clear without damaging the chrome powder underneath. I have done a bit of experimenting, and I've found the acrylic clear to be a lot easier to sand and buff than the polyesters, but both can be done. Some will just take more effort in the buffing stage.
