  • hate to see this,1 bad egg can try to spoil the bunch

follow up to a topic I posted a week or so ago

Not that I don't make mistakes, because I do daily
Mistakes I have made have helped get me where I am, and where I'm going
I do however try my absolute best to do the best quality I can, and fix mistakes immediately, and BEFORE the problem leaves the shop.

I spend alot of time on hot rod, street rod, motorcycle, airplane, boat etc forums trying to spread the gospel of powder coating, and educating as many people all over the world about the benefits of powder coating in hopes that custom powder coating as an industry grows, benefits, and maybe Streetwerkz does also.
Paying it forward so to speak, not to mention I love hot rods, and like helping these guys.

I actually spent several hours with this guys father educating them on benefit of pc over paint, and they decided to go with pc, over paint.
man, someone in Fla. could have been a superstar, with a very nice pay day. A whole hot rod chassis, 3 stages!!

Instead this is what happened, and the PUBLIC aftermath, this is one of the largest hot rod forums out there.

I do not ever want to be the subject of a post like this, makes me motivated to set my own personal/company bar higher

What do you think went wrong for the clear to do that? Think he'll give you a chance to fix it?

So this was or wasn't coated by your shop?

I dunno whats right anymore. Up until a few weeks ago I thought I was doing everything right....fully cure every coat. I tend to believe people who are far more versed in PC than I am.... But I don't recall reading the directions on any ones powder to undercure a base coat intentionally to make a top coat adhere to it.

That's what I plan on doing for a while man... I enjoy working on these small/medium unique parts for people. May not be a lot of money, but I'm still having fun with it.

Re: hate to see this,1 bad egg can try to spoil the bunch

Now I'm worried again! I had that same issue with the clear peeling,on some pocket irons for a pool table. The problem,I was told, was that I had under cured the clear, and I had. I had also done a second set the same way but they had'nt been installed yet. So I was told I could throw the second set back in for a full cure cycle even though it had been about 4-6 months since they were first done. I hope this is right. If not I think they are still sitting unused. So should I get them back and start over or not? Also I've read that all coats should be fully cured before the next and that won't effect adhesion.Others say you should stop after flow out ,still others say stop about 5 minutes after it reaches full pmt then let cool and add the next coat then fully cure the last coat. Most confusing was tiger's directions that said to under cure the base coat for better intercoat adhesion but then said that metallics should be fully cured before clearing. Does that mean you can't expect the same intercoat adhesion with metallics as non metallics or what? I would like to be a good egg. Or apple. So any help clearing this up would be greatly apreciated! thanks in advance.

Dag I jumped from page 1 to page 3 got tired of reading you know If only he would had stopped at the black he would have his car back together now I can see shooting clear over metallics but not over solid colors so much? You can sand out a solid one if you some how get a scuff. But metallics no can do on paint or powder.

And I wonder what filler was used? The high temp all-metal filler I have was not all that bad to sand but if they used the all-metal that is made in Canada it might be tougher? I would like to know what filler they used if you could find out? I don't need to join any more forums than I am already a member of. I forget how many I am on until my birthday and then WHAM the emails come rolling in

Our shop did not do the job, we are in Ohio, Don, and Dan ore in Florida.
I only helped guide them on-line as to how to do the powder properly

the coater had to blast everything back down, and re coat without a clear

IMO the coater did not follow cure cycles properly, or used incompatible products

I don't know what right either trial and error on customer parts is not a good practice however.
We did simple by the book coating for about 3 years be for offering any kind of custom coating.
the whole while playing, learning in spare time.

I cure all multiple coats till they flow out, the full cure cycle on the final coat, have sent them out for analysis, and got positive responses from PPG

Filler is Tiger Drylac epo strong the only thing IMO that works for a light weight body filler

I'm confused about this as well. I thought that you completely cured each coat and then apply the clear. I've done it this way and haven't had any problems, or is proper to half cure the base before applying the clear?

Now one word I would say is if you want to shoot an acrylic it needs to be cooler or cold from what I am told so it want crack but I do shoot my clear hot but I have always had the base cured so maybe he will tell us the best way and I think he is going to say pull it out before like half time of cure and then shoot the clear? Like if cure at 400 is 20min than take it out after 10 at 400 and let it coll like around 100 and apply clear and then bring it back up to 400 and finish what it takes to do the clear?

I do not know the name of the shop.
From what I have learned, it's a production shop who says they do custom.
The shop has stripped everything, and are applying a primer, and a high gloss black, no clear this time.
Which will look fine, and works out for the customers.
Sounds like the coater is going to fix everything.

I feel sorry for the coater and the customer...custom coating is not as easy as manufacturing thinks it is..not just any powder will do or process for the custom coater, they must have flexibilty. That is why I have so much respect for the custom coater !! they do damn good work, the best you will ever see, and truly put their hearts into it...I love you guys
