  • Metal flake additives.............

Is it possible to add a metal flake additive to dormants? Has anyone ever done it........pics would be greatly appreciated..........

I know the granny smith green dormant has metal flake sparkle to it, but can you add it to standard dormants? I've shot the granny smith dormant......a real crowd pleaser........

    Thanks

New one for me, but depending on what look you want is where you would add the metal flake...if you want a POP put it in the clear topcoat...please refer to the Flip Flops on the webpage as you can see the topcoats are more radical

Thanks King..........I'll give them a look. I looked before hand but I didn't see much that was the look I was looking for. I was wondering if putting it in the clear would give me the look I was looking for.............

This is what I'm lookin' for.........not the color, but the metal flake effect.

We mix in flake with clear over a metallic to give the flake added depth.
It usually looks awesome, depending on the color
one thing to consider is to not over do it with the clear/flake mix.
We usually add flake at 1%-2% measured by weight.
anything more seem to either be to much, or not allow the flake to lay flat, and stick up out of the surface of the clear top coat

          Re: Metal flake additives.............

So you are shooting a metallic base (chrome) then shooting the clear and flake over the top, then shooting color, and finally more clear?

I'd just like to make sure I get it right..........LOL

1-2% by weight........so if I mix 1 lb of clear, then put .02 lbs of flake max........

Thanks for all the help guys...........

Also be sure you mix it completely or use your fluidizing hopper to mix it...otherwise the effect will be spotchy. This is considered dry blending ....

              agreed

We purchased a digital scale that reads up to 2000 grams to make it easier (about $120 from JEGS, a block from our shop)
I will set the container on the scale and zero it out (tare button) then add powder (448 grams= 1 lb) then the metallic pigment @ 1-2%.
I usually go closer to 2%, I like heavy flake
I screw on the lid tightly and shake the tar out of it.
then use it in my 2 lb fluidizer.
              works great.

Definitely do a test part first, alot of times the flake color will bounce around the clear inside and "tint" the clear.
nice effect most times, and nice glow, BUT it will Change the base color entirely sometimes.
Once I did a gold, and red flake over candy red that turned color to a cool copper instead of candy red with red, and gold flakes

I have had no success with a flake over a powder chrome.

I figured I would save you a little guessing, trial and error, and $$ wasted that goes along with the learning curve

I really appreciate it. I can use all the help I can get..........

So only mix it with my clear coat (acrylic) and spray it as the final clear......correct?

Thanks again......you guys are the greatest.

I mix with color, or clear.... please never limit yourself by anything I say
                      trial and error is fun
I have mixed 4-5 different color flakes with chrome or over chrome with no luck at all however
I have not mixed a flake with granny smith, but have done a clear with green, and gold over granny smith that came out nice
