  • Second coat

On just about anything I shoot, I seem to have good luck with first coat as far as how smooth a part turns out, but if for some reason I need to throw a second coat on, I ALWAYS get O.P.

What am I doing wrong? Whats the diff between 1 coat and 2 where this happens?

Distance about a foot to 14 inches, Ground is good, to grounding rod as previously posted. KV's around 20 to 25, and I even put on a fresh hook so the ground is right.

letting the part cool below 200*?
      building to high film thickness?
I like to let the part cool, and place a nice even coat light second coat, unless there are some crazy Faraday areas, then I shoot the Faraday areas hot, wait to cool, shoot the rest.

        Re: Second coat

Thanks man, I do let the part cool all the way down (wich is still abot 100 degrees here in central Florida). I could very well be shooting it on to thick the second coat, but it seems to me Im doing the same as the first.

But are you saying you put the second coat on thinner than the first? Cause I shoot the same each coat (or at least I try to make it the same)

I lay them about the same generally.
I lay the second coat on cold (below 200*) then apply the second coat at 12-14 inches gun to part distance, and at 1/2 the original coats kv's.
applying just enough to not see the original color anymore, then check for light spots with a flash light.

THIS NEXT TIP TAKES ALOT OF PRACTICE, AND SPECIFIC POWDER KNOWLEDGE DO NOT ATTEMPT ON YOUR CLIENTS PARTS UNTIL YOU HAVE MASTERED IT!!

Some colors (transparent/candies) on the second coat I apply as above, put in the oven until the powder just starts to gel (usually about 2 minutes in my oven) then pull out and inspect for color consistency, if I need more color in a spot I add it, and fully cure.

If I understand you right you are putting the second coat on thinner than the first?

I like my base coat to be around 4-7 mils, and top coat as close to 2 mils as possible, hard to do by hand, but thats what I try to do

                      Re: Second coat

Sorry mixed up my reply with a different question else where.

Try again, I do pretty good on the second coats. Flat stuff is my real issue.
