  • Newbie here

    Hello all,

Ive always wanted to try my hand at powder coating. I picked up a cheap Craftsman powder coater for 45 bucks clearance at Sears. Either way, I bought some powder from summit. I have only been doing small parts in a non food toaster oven. I just tried doing a fuel door in chrome black. Suppose to have a silver base, the base came out good but then I applied the black chrome and it wouldn't stick at all. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I really don't have any/much knowledge of powder coating. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I also have been looking at a Eastwood hotcoat gun. Thanks already

I started with the Craftsmen and toaster oven also! I found with that gun when you want to do second coats, you are going to have to "hot flock". (Heating the part up to at least the melting point of the powder you are using....usually around 200* and spraying the powder while its hot). Invest in an IR temp gun. About $70 at sears.

        Welcome to the forum TbirdTommy!

I agree with Harleydad. I have and still use the Craftsman gun and first check your ground clip to your part. It has to hit bare metal to work. If needed preheat the piece to around 150f then remove and coat. Hotflocking as suggested is a good technique but like HD said to easy to over coat so practice will payoff for ya. Also when coating because of the push strength of the air coming from the gun back off a little more on the distance from the piece. Goodluck and keep us posted on how it goes. Any more questions just ask away.

                  Re: Newbie here

When applying the powder do ya'll suggest connecting the ground to the part itself or to the frame/hook its sitting/hanging on?

Thanks again, ill take a ride up to Sears tonight!

                    Re: Newbie here

The hook should work, but I also started with the "airless" powdercoating gun and found that if there is a way to connect it to the part itself that it does work better.

                    and Welcome aboard!
