  • Dust collectors

It looks like I'm in the market for a better dust collection system for my new pressure blasting set-up.

What are you all using? I had a bucket dust trap and small vac that was OK for my syphon set-up, but doesn't cut it with the new pressure blaster.

Anyone have one from HF? What size do I need?

Could you use the same one to draw air from a powder booth? That's the next thing I need to build...

    Re: Dust collectors

I picked up a used Skat 176-DC from the same guy I bought my blasting cabinet from. Worth every penny man! It keeps everything dust free when blasting. I only have 400 square feet to work with so keeping the dust down is critical. Before that I was going to go with the VAC-36, seems like a good deal. I was never a big fan of the HF one even though I never used it. Just one of those things I would not consider buying from them.

The only one I seen was a reclaimer that had 95 or so cfm. the others they have on there seem to be for wood working. Im thinking of going to a bigger shop vac. Nothern tools has a 175 cfm shop vac brand for 90 bucks. I think the key of the shop vac is use the desposable dust bags that are also avialable.

        That's a nice unit HD!

Has anyone used a lower-end version like this?:

        $369 - http://www.tptools.com/p/2324,52_Vac-36 ... ystem.html
        or
        $199 - http://www.tptools.com/p/2322,52_Vac-35 ... ystem.html

Doesn't the shop vac filter plug-up really fast? I've seen the drywall bags - is that what you use?

There's a ton of dust flying around in the cabinet now with the new pressure set-up - much more than I noticed with the syphon gun.

I know my vac shop's filter would get pretty clogged up when I was using it as a dust collector. I had to clean it out almost on a weekly basis. I think those conversion kits might work well though, at least they look like it would in theory.

Just out of curiosity, did you notice this text at the bottom of the description of each? Marketing ploy to get someone to purchase the more expensive ones? Possibly.

When using a cabinet for more than occasional use (about 1 hour daily) or commercial use (5 hours per week), a vacuum is not adequate for dust removal due to limited capacity. We recommend our 176-DC or 301-DC Dust Collectors.
I'm sure you're right and it's mostly a marketing thing... but I actually agree with it. I know my vac shop would not be able to keep up with the larger cabinet and pressure pot. The 176-DC is just right, and even then I have to take a 5 minute break here and there to allow it to catch up (rusty parts create a lot of dust).

There have been days where I've used the cabinet for 5 hours a day and I'm sure others are also. This might be one of those things where it pays off to spend a couple of hours looking for a good deal on a used unit on craigslist.

Yah, the filter gets screwed up pretty good. Haven't tried the bags yet but I plan to.

Question for you: How much pressure are you blasting with? To get more dust you either have to be blowing more media out or at a pressure that's pulverizing it faster. Maybe lowering your psi will decrease your dust.

1 hour a day? If you were only blasting one hour a day who would buy a $369 dust collector?

The bigger industrial units are better I'm sure, but you'd think the mid-sized units could handle more than 1 hour a day.

I'm still confused as to just what I need...

I've been backing down the pressure - about 50 psi is where I'm at right now and it's a major cloud in the cabinet in about 5 secs.

I use a 6hp 16gal Shop-Vac. My blast cabinet is a five footer and when you turn the vac on it will stand the gloves out and suck the door shut. I bought it on black friday.

Me too, seems like the only difference is the shape. I'm thinking the more cfm you have the better off you are. If its to much just make another vent hole. I want to get a reclaimer for sure.

I use the bags. It collects all the dust nicely. The filter doesn't clog and the vac stays at full power the whole time ya blast.
