  • ford water pump coating

Good morning. Hope someone can help me with the procedure for dissassembling a Ford 302 water pump for coating. It appears the shaft is pressed out from the back side through the impeller but I did not want to force it. Thanks for any help.

As a Ford guy, first Id like to say there are about 18 different variations on a 302 waterpump depending on year and block numbers. Secondly I would say yes it is almost a for sure thing that it it pressed it. A picture would really seal the deal so to speek.

Thanks for the welcome. Gongchuan, it is a '68 302 with a passenger side outlet if that helps. I don't have any pictures here at work.

Yeah, Im almost posotive its a press. Is it a new pump or old? 68, wow thats one of the first ones out there. Course the block is a 289 punched back in those days.

Here is a pic of the motor. Currently is out and getting stroked to 347 and roller cam installed. Also changing all the motor items to black, silver and polished. Webers are getting coated black, intake silver, ect. It is in a 66 fastback.

                    Re: ford water pump coating

Check for felt washers on the butterfly shafts where they exit the carb body; these serve to keep debris out of the bushing. They are usually saturated in fuel/oil/grime and will weep nasty stuff for days. (Not on all models... you have to check)

Best to find replacements and take them out before heating. (You WILL ruin them getting them out; get replacements first.)

                      Re: ford water pump coating

The only problem I have seen is finding the rebuild kits for the pumps? The companies that do them of course don't want parts out on the market I did find some rebuild kits on eBay and also make sure you take the measurement before you press the shafts out so you can put it back like it should. Yep you going to need a press for sure.

The only other opp you have is to contact a re-builder and then take them apart and coat them and then let them put it back to speck?

Buy a new one from parts house, press out part, coat, press in part, install.
