  • Hi My Name is Alex.

Hi my name is Alex. I'm new to the forum and to the world of powder coating.
I have been powder coating since last winter. I have to say this powder coating business is cool - to see a powder go from powder to a liquid like state. I have been powder coating parts for my 1992 300zx (soon to be a turbo). But I have a question on powder coating plastic - can it be done?
The last 2 parts I tried to powder coat came out great, but they were a thicker plastic. Then I tried the timing belt cover and the powder did stick, but at the end the plastic started to warp at 300 degrees. Is there a low temp powder out there that works better on plastic, or am I just doing something wrong?

Welcome aboard. The thing with plastics that I have found, you should always buy a test piece from the bone yard to try it on first.

On most powders there are lower temp. longer cure times for each. For instance instead of 400 for 10 min, you might get away with 350 for 20 or 25 min. You would have to find some of the graphs floating around on this site to figure out which powders will do what at temp and cure time. Sometimes 10 or 15 degrees are all you need to get a plastic part done.
