  • Easy Price Check

How much would you charge to do this wheel? I did about 20 min worth of prep with some aircraft stripper and power washer to remove some kind of coating. Then outgassed and shot 1 coat mirror black. This is for a guy at a bike shop and it coould lead to some good business. I just want to know about what the going rate was so I know what kind of deal to give him. I am doing this one on the cheap to get the foot in the door so to speak.

    Thanks for your help.

      Re: Easy Price Check

We do M/C wheel starting at $80 per wheel, plus media cleaning.
for a in stock, single stage color.

My advice is do good quality for a fair price, or you will always be the "cheap guy"
train you clients properly from day one, so they always know what to expect.

just my $.02, which is only worth a penny

Cool thanks for your help. This guy has stuff that needs pc. I was told to just clean up and shoot some powder. (not to worry about sandblasting) No I know about where my price scale should be set.

Like Streetwerkz said, do quality work and educate your customers. If you're blasting them then I would start at $75 each.

            Re: Easy Price Check

I'm with Streetwerkz on this one. I will not just coat a part for a customer, thats my reputation in the market not theirs!! Educate your customer make sure they understand the needed prep and why. I get requests all the time to only coat the faces of wheels to save money. I just tell the customer this is our price and we only coat the entire wheel if you only want the faces coated its still the same price.

I would much rather go into a customer with a part that amazes them at my regular price, than to go in with a so so part and a cheap price because they will eventually demand better quality and still want it at a cheap price.

              Re: Easy Price Check

I agree - coming in at a low price to "get your foot in the door" can backfire.

Better to pick a price you are happy with and consistently do them for that price instead of having to jack the price (to a "normal" rate) for the next one.

Me personally, Just me so dont crucify me guys. If i were doing that for a sample part, to generate more buisness I would have stripped(media blasted), outgassed, and used KL Primer to fill in some of that horrid casting. I would want to show a smooth finish not a cast finish through the powder. and wheels I start at 80/wheel now(used to be 50).

                  Re: Easy Price Check

I also start at $80 a wheel including blasting. If necessary, stripping may be extra. As a sample, I might leave the rough casting just to show a customer the differences in a smooth substrate and the rough casting as long as the spokes and lips are smooth so you can show off the gloss as well. That lets them see exactly what you can and cannot cover with one coat of powder.

I was almost thinking of doing that and spending the extra time, but this was a spare wheel he had around to see my work. I know for a fact he gets stuff powdercoated all the time (as all he work on is vintage and restoration stuff) but didn't talk to him about extents of what if knows. When I go back in there i will discuss it with him. The castings was rougher than anything I have ever seen and would have taken alot of blasting and primer to get desired results, but the outer lip is smooth and made sure to make that a 'mirror finish' as to see the results of good prep work.

That looks like a set I did a few weeks ago. I coated right over the factory finish. 100.00 e
He was so happy, he would have paid double.

I'm at $120.00 per wheel depending on how deep the casting pits are.

I agree with JHforman, those old harley wheels can come out real nice if you sand out all the lettering, smooth out the poor casting and apply kl primer or a flat black epoxy as a base coat.I like to use super durable wet black which seems to keep the orange peel down a little.
