  • I need help with a wheel

I have a customer that wants me to do just the lip of this wheel in Monster can green. First off what color green do you guys think would work best? More importantly what would be the best way to do just the lip. I have always been ask to do a whole wheel so I've always stripped and started from scratch. However in a case like this is it possible to just powder the lip? Do you guys think that black part of the wheel would survive without damage? Looking for advice on the best way to handle this one. Here is a pic and thank in advance for the help.

First I'd ask is the lip coated or just plain polished aluminum?

Me personally I don't work with previous coatings I strip EVERYTHING down to bare metal. If I took the job I would require that I be able to strip the whole thingl and do the black and green both in powder and then apply a clear over everything. I know this does not answer your questions but that job has the potential to be one of those nightmare jobs if you let it be.

If that is a factory finish the clear coat is prob. liquid and will not survive the cure cycle. Try to sell him on doing the whole wheel. If not I would turn it away.

I can help on the color. Monster green is pretty close to lime green, you probably need to hit up PBTP and get a sample of it. I am pretty sure that will be the closest color. For the wheel, I would refuse the job unless stripping the whole wheel/coating the whole wheel. I am in agreement with everyone else on this.

Well guys you pretty much confirmed what I was thinking. I do agree on the lime green after looking thru the colors. It looks to be very very close. Thanks guys.

here is PBTP Lime Green....It matches Kawasaki's the closest I have found.

two different pics with two different cameras, but you can get the idea.

Well since I got such a good response on this I thought I would ask one more thing. I don't usually ask pricing questions but was curious as to what you guys would charge for a complete strip and redo w/ black center and green lip and of course clear over everything. Just wanna see if I'm in the ball park.

Our pricing estimator puts it at $468.00 for all four wheels.

I wouldn't do those for less than $150 a wheel. Add another $75 each if he wants them clearcoated afterwards. You're going to have a lot of time into those.

Re: I need help with a wheel

That's the problem with getting prices from other people on here. My price and wiseguyz's price are a lot different but both prices are correct.... Hows that... Well it depends on the labor rate, shop over head, materials, stripping cost, Ect. of the individual shop. I can do them for $470.00 and make good money but wiseguyz may be loosing or just breaking even at that rate. There are so many variables in pricing what makes money for me may not for you, so I suggest you only use these estimates as a ball park figure. You need to figure out a way to account for all of your labor, energy, materials, rent, bills, utilities, Ect. in you prices so you will be sure you are always making money. I suggest purchasing a GOOD accounting program with a estimator built in so you can estimate cost quickly and consistently. It will also help you keep track of your expenses and income and help you see where you money is going and where you need to make adjustments.

Re: I need help with a wheel

I quoted him $125/wheel so I guess I'm in the ballpark.

Maybe you mentioned it before, but what estimator are you using?

                              Thanks.
