ok,what tapes are you using and how do you get a fine line with the blade.
i tried a wheel these past week end.and it turned out ok ,but were i taped you can see the line(wave).i'll post some pics 2 morrow
What I ended having to do was mask the lip and shoot the vein. Then mask the whole wheel and shoot the lip, clear overall.
Did you fully cure the vein, cool, tape the wheel off, shoot the red and UNMASK BEFORE curing the red or heat the red for a few minutes, cool, unmask and then cure the red? The clear is a no brainer...everything gets it! I'm redoing the lime and black wheel and don't want to do it again! The last time I tried with "just a couple of minutes heat" the powder flowed into the taped! This time though the black is almost fully cured ( last time it wasn't ) and taped off for the lime, I'll be shooting that tomorrow.
JW...As far as using a knife for a straight edge, I don't, others might. I just take my time with some narrow tape and work it slowly around the wheel following an edge that's built into the wheel.
Yeah, merging tape lines have always sucked trying to line them up and with their ridges, etc.. I know metallics you can't sand, but how about the veins? After I fully cure the lime, I'm going to go over the tape line with some 1200 before shooing the clear, pics later...Was the red fully cured and it still bled thru?
I KNIFED IT.this was of trial wheel, and the first one i've done in too colors like this.
but i can still see the line between the gun metal and the chrome line connect.i did the chrome first and then the gun metal grey.Is there a certain order to shoot wheels or not?Or can maybe some-one can throw up a sticky step by step on how to get the PBTP touch to these types of wheels and colors????
Sooner or later I will mess with some 5 lug pony's. Chrome lip black inside. I love the older 5 star pony wheels, but I hated the clear coat they used.
Did you curve the tape or knife the line or both? To get smoother curved lines "I" work with lengths of tape @ 10" or so long ( carefully overlapping and aligning as you go ) it's easier to handle in tight areas. Firmly "plant" one end and hold down with your finger, then slightly stretch the other end following the line you want. Move or slide the planted finger end @ 1/4 to a 1/2inch at a time on the tape ( pushing the tape down to make it stick ) following your line. It's tedious and time consuming, but it's worth it when you end up with a nice straight line!
Okay I just saw the other wheel. Looks to me like you pulled some powder off with the tape in spots. Was the powder still sticky when you took the tape off and which direction did you pull..away from the powder or towards the powder? Looks like you had some longer straight areas, just try not to go as far before sticking down the tape.
