I have a customer who I did his muffler off his R6 sportbike in hi-temp black. He wanted it to match the regular mirror black I did on some other parts. Would the regular powder hold up on just the can (muffler) overtop of the hi-temp? He doesn't race the bike, just wants it to look good. Could I get away with doing it?

Re: Regular gloss black over hi-temp on bike muffler
This is what I would do.
Here is a gloss high temp powder http://www.powderbuythepound.com/catalo ... cts_id=500
If it was "ME" I would have the guy bring the bike by HOT or normal temp. Keep it running and take your IR gun and check the temp on the muffler all over. See what it reads. Most people have done regular powder and it seems to hold up fine, but just checking cant hurt.
If its over 400f or 450f I would say use High temp. People do use regular powder on brake calipers for normal driving. (Just some things to think about)

Re: Regular gloss black over hi-temp on bike muffler
If you do use regular powder, I doubt if it will work over the high-temp due to the silicone content in those powders. If it was me, I would remove the old finish and start with fresh substrate. Like Powder Coating Pros says, if the muffler gets too hot the regular powder may not last, but many on here have used it with good results. You may lose some gloss eventually if the muffler is too hot also.
Best of luck.Dan

Ceramic over 'high temp' powder should be fine, since the ceramic doesn't care what the base coat is made of - silicone or not.

Re: Regular gloss black over hi-temp on bike muffler
This is where it gets hairy....until a product or process has been tested by our lab we do not offer it or recommend it. Realisticly, we can't...if we did we would have to believe everything everyone told us and that would mean that I really am the Queen of the Universe :P
