  • My poltergeist!!!

Well, the Iron Gunmetal Glimmer rims that turned out so nice? He HATES them and told me I need to redo them because they are a lighter color than the truck. Unbelievable. Now he's blaming my color samples (they're too small), and thinks I should be able to perfectly match a color no matter what it is. I explained to him...you can match paint to powder colors, but it is nearly impossible to perfectly match powder colors to paint, especially using catalog pictures and little swatches without the clear topcoat (which in the case of this particular color....lightened the final result considerably). He said now that he'd rather have black than a metallic gray that is lighter than the vehicle color. He did however offer to pay for me to redo them after I explained to him that HE picked the color from the samples and yeah, looks close enough, do them. Unbe-frikking-lieveable!!!! I am going to take one of the rims, shoot a translucent black topcoat over them and see how it comes out. If that works, its a simple matter of a final topcoat on all of them. Otherwise, blast them all off and start over. Can you feel my pain??? Did I mention what a p.i.t.a. 22" rims are?

That sucks Dan Makes me glad that all the wheels I've done so far have been black, don't have to worry about matching colors. I've had people ask me about matching paint colors and I tell them its very difficult to do and have it turn out right. They don't always understand why its so hard

        Re: My poltergeist!!!

Some points to consider (after stewing about it all last night)

        1. Yes he is the guy that I did the gold wheels for.
        2. Yes he owns the BIGGEST tuner shop in the area with a huge repeat client base...I hate to not do work for him.
        3. He is one of the few vendor contracts I have that when (and I stress the WHEN) he is happy, he pays right now, and pays well.

It sucks to have to redo these, especially after I wet-sanded and buffed them all so they look perfect, but I look at it this way (at least this morning)...if I can make this guy happy, I can make ANYBODY happy!

Oh yeah, and #4 - he's my son's boss. I don't want to piss the guy off and make a bad situation for my kid either.

Funny you should ask that...I truly believe he is. (My son thinks so too)

then we should feel sorry for him...maybe you should wait a day or two and then see if he changes his mind

                Enough said.....

                Quit bitchin and get strippin

Do a test panel with what you have done and are going to do. Take it to his truck and ask him if this is ok.

Thanks. Thats exactly what I'm going to do. I told him I'll shoot the translucent black over ONE wheel and see what he thinks. Otherwise, all four will be mirror black by the end of the week.

I feel your pain, I just had a big job of a bunch of stuff to do for this ricer boy (and he was a ricer, not tuner - blinged out 91 Ford escort that he said would run low 12's because of a Spec clutch and flywheel and coffee can) - he picked every color out from some sample panels, but mostly from bottles and other samples I had coated. Then he gets pissed off because I did not email him pictures daily of the process as each thing got sandblasted, then powdered, then baked, then topcoated, etc. I mean give me a break man!! Then he was pissed because I said I could possibly deliver them to him one day, then told him I was unable to make it that day. Then I finally did deliver everything to him and he was happy with NOTHING because they were the wrong colors and "not the colors he said", even though I wrote everything down on tags and tied them to the parts as he watched me and double checked everything. In the end he was happy with the finished product as being coated and just offered to take $20 off the total, which I took to get the frick out of there! So yeah, I can feel your pain Dan.

Side note - what the heck do you use to blast powder off?? Anything I have tried takes FOREVER...

                      Re: My poltergeist!!!

Next thing you know this guy will tell his clients, "if you bitch a complain he'll redo them for you until you are happy." Your in a tough spot for sure. The hot head in me would tell him to take a hike, and the business man in me says make him happy, but no at a loss as it wasn't your fault. Have him pay "cost" and mark it up like 200%.

Yea, how do you blast powder off, beside chemical stripping?

                        Re: My poltergeist!!!

If I have to take the powder off, they'll go to my commercial blaster (and I'll charge him for it). If I can get away with just re-coating them again, that's the route I'll take.

Only thing I would recommend is to make sure you can duplicate the ONE wheel exactly after he approves it - he will likely place them all side-by-side (like he did with the gold ones!) and nit-pick...

I hope the translucent black does the trick.

Again, I know he is a difficult customer, but I think going the extra mile will be the best route (especially given the additional circumstances). It may take a while, but I'll bet it pays off.
