  • POOR PENETRATION INTO RECESS AREA'S

Despite the physical conditions (faraday cage),it is possible to achieve a minimum coating thickness in the corners. With poor penetration
procedures penetration depth is very limited.
Extreme film thickness variations are noticeable....

    Here are some possible causes

    1. Feed air too high - change or lower pressure
    2. Air speed too high - adjust equipment controls
    2. Powder flow too high - adjust equipment controls to suit the part
    3. Not enough powder flow- adjust/optimise equipment parameters
    4. Unsuitable nozzle - Utilize flat spray nozzle or deflector
    5. Insufficient charging of powder - adjust voltage
    6. Voltage too high - Adjust/reduce voltage
    7. Faraday cage area due to electrical field - reduce voltage
    8. Insufficient grounding - use clean hooks, test transfer resistance
    9. Powder spray too wide - use different nozzle or deflector
    10. Distance from gun to part is to big or small - increase or decrease distance

Hmm...looks like I should practice with my fan tip a bit more.

Fan tips are a godsend. I acctually pretty much only use a 6mm fan tip on my Nordson Sure coat. Large flats I'll grab the 3mm fan. Havnt tried the "pencil" style tips, think the powder speed would be to fast for Faraday area's as well. One problem I have noticed, espacially with fan tips is the smaller the opening, the faster the powder exit sped. Too fast speed and it will not stick into Faraday areas either.

That's due to the increase in velocity. Changing the outlet size only, but not changing the volume or pressure will give that result. If you go to a smaller tip, you need to pull the air or powder volume (or both) down accordingly.

Ya, I know, hard to get flow down slow enough with my Nordson for the 3mm fan tip on tight areas. I use the smaller tip on harger pieces, fans out the powder to a wider swath

I was just not going to type anything but you guys opened the box up(no pun intended). I recommend lube for better penetration in the recessed areas. If you need any recommendations let me know I work at jack shack.....I mean arcade/theater/book/video/toy adult store. I love my night job & I just haven't been able to bring my self to quit it yet.

King what do the area's own

                    Bandit,
Seeing that you use a Nordson SureCoat, Try the recoat mode for the first coat in those hard to powder coat areas. When I have used a Nordson SureCoat, I only used the recoat mode to powder coat everything first coat. It made powder coating anything easy.
