  • HUMIDITY PRODLEMS POSTED BY OUR BUDDY AUTOCYCLE

Weather/humidity is definitely a factor with the Back ionization. Here is how the problem can be virtually eliminated. turn the kv all the way down on the controller and increase the air/powder flow. Start spraying the part and slowly increase kv until you begin to get attraction on the part. Now spray the part in a quick motion across the part if you have some areas that still dont want to attract try pulsing the trigger and putting the powder onto that area a little at a time until it covers. Now you will waste more powder than normal when you are having this problem. This will mainly happen on second coats and its basically like you are doubling the kv that is charging the powder when the humidity is high.

We just worked through this yesterday and I was having the same problem with both my gema and the king coat gun. The back ionization was so bad that you could stop spraying powder stand back and watch the pin holes just appear. Made these adjustments and layed down three coats cold, and then base coat / topcoat on a test panel cold.

Yup, I agree. On my caswell gun, before I had the nordson, I could barely spray when it was humid. I also used the Eastwood pipes that are inside the Hotcoat gun, I would use them in my Caswell gun. But, in humid times, the plastic pipes would also Tribo charge the powder. Leading to a heck of a charge. Sometimes I'd get a 3in arc st the tip of my gun to the substrate. One plus with the hobby guns, you can shoot powder and not have charge voltage. I would do a mix of spray and on/off/on with the charge current, thus limiting the powders charge. Unfortunately, its a little tougher with My nordson, Powder flow, current on.

I did a little research and found this posted in 2007 on Caswell.

      http://forum.caswellplating.com/powder- ... ation.html

Harleydad and baz were in on the postings.

Could that be the cause of the small pin like holes on the rims I just did last week? I think my humidity was good? Never had a problem before? And this was a re shoot over EW high gloss bk that I sanded down and then re did them with PBTP mirror bk?

Its very possible duke. I was having a bad problem with it on a set of rims, and thought it was outgassing. Ended up taking them to Jason at Auto-Cycle to do for me and he confirmed that it was back-ionization. The humidity in my shop is at about 60-70% right now and I`m still having problems with it.

They turned out great Josh here are a few pics. I experienced a little problem with back ionization on the first wheel but once I got the gun dialed in they coated with no problem. This Iron Gunmetal Glimmer is a nice color!! See you tomorrow!

When I worked for BMW and Porsche anthracite was just plain old black.

I love Gunmetal Glimmer and I have tried it under hot candy blue....Jason you might want to try it.

When the problem with BI is happening what are you seeing? When I started reworking the wheels I did I kept seeing little spots showing up. I blew them off two times and the same both times. (I am seeing I was wasting my time and powder now) I then took them back off and re sanded and cleaned and the bake them to around 300 and then the next day I pulled them out of the oven made sure they looked good blew some air at the just in case something got on them. (Just maybe I should have not done that?) I then started coating them and even had better lighting and all looked good and all places coated great. It was not until I took them out that I could see the look like pin holes on the spokes some a lot and some just very few? I tried to take a picture of them but wouldn't you know it I had dust on my lens and that screwed up my shot and the customer had got his wheels. He was happy but I was not.

As for as grounding all 4 wheels were at 0 to 1 ohms and the buzzer was buzzing. I had jumpers connecting all of them and back to the gun ground. These wheels were 17x10 ones and a lot of area just like the ones Jason did size wise.

I also was shooting over my first screw up of them but were well sanded down with 240 and then re sanded with 400. They were smooth.

I also run up on this trying to get more info and just wondered if any of you had ever used this? http://www.intecapc.com/stc3.html

Wheels turned out great, THANKS Jason, you saved my rear end ! Customer was very pleased and will be back with more parts. I may just sub out anymore wheels I get to you till I can afford a better gun.

Duke, I was getting what looked like pinholes, like the substrate was outgassing. It wasn`t visable till they cured.

Just a maybe but when I screwed up on the first coating of the wheels and decided to sand them down I didn't see or couldn't see any outgassing but that does not mean it was not there? I had saw some places that I had not coated good and tried to hot flock it and did it at the wrong time and ended up with a very ruff sandy looking set of wheels. Jason said he had done wheels like them before and had no problems with any outgassing and told me it was my call if I wanted to preheat them and I didn't. I guess next time I will just do the heat up like before and cover my butt!

It is a really nice color (in spite of what my customer says). Don't forget, those babies need clear! Here are the ones I did in the same color, after clear.
