  • powdercoating wheels

Ok, getting ready to silver vein a set of rally wheels, they have a groove where the two halves of the wheels are welded together. My question is what is the best way to get all of the dirt and rust out of the little groove? I have most of it out but I have some glass beads that are still stuck in there. I've been using a dental pick to dig them out. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

You've already found the best way I know of. Work with the pic, blow out with air...rinse, repeat! I actually do it with the rim inverted so the stuff doesn't keep falling back into the cracks.

    Best of luck.

Well, got two of the wheels done. One wheel bubbled up around the groove where to two peices of metal meet. Got it cleaned up recoated it, then clearcoated. Here's what I did , blasted, cleaned groove out, wiped down, then put them in the oven for about 30 min. at 450 deg. Then pulled them out sprayed with liquiguard, let them set for 20min. Then sprayed them with silver vein. My new question is, can I heat the wheels up to about 450 deg. pull them out and immediately spray them or do they need to cool down? I'm going to try them without the liquigaurd this time to see if it makes any difference. Thanks for any information.

Yeah, I tried below 200 deg, around 180 and the powder started melting as it hit the wheel. Wheel turned almost all silver, had to recoat. So I let the other wheel cool down to about 100 deg. and turned out good. Might work fine with a solid color but it didn't with silver vein!!

some powder's have Accelerators to Liquefy the powder quickly...when purchasing powder's it might be a good idea to ask specific questions about what the powder was designed to coat...
