  • How is everyone doing with the KING COAT gun now??

Hey guys, just wondering if you guys have learned some new settings / tips / tricks for using the king coat gun.

I bought it and haven't been able to get it dialed in either. Can you guys share your experiences with it thus far? and any advice or tips on using it.

Practice makes perfect. I've spent afew weekends since I've had the gun just messing w/ the air and KH to get it right on all kinds of substrate. Everything from flat pieces to valve covers. Just take your time and play area with it, after awhile you'll get a good idea of what works best. One thing thats really helped me out is keeping the air pressure as low as possible.

The knob all the way to the left when facing the controller will adjust your powder volume/air volume. The higher you turn it up, the more air that comes out which allows more powder volume out as well. Setting one all the way to the left is manual and setting 2 is automatic. If you are in setting 2 the air will not shut off when the trigger is pulled, therefore you must be in setting 1. The kv's are adjustable to the knob next to automatic/manual adjustment. Please let us know what we can do to assist you, if you let us know what problems you are having we can help you in finding the proper settings for the gun to fix those problems. Auto-Cycle correct me if I am wrong on any of these settings.

Sorry I have been so busy with my "real" job everyone else has called in sick and I have been alone for 2 weeks..... I have not had the chance to use my King Gun since the first set of rims I did with it. I have another set of rims sitting in my shop right now that need to be blasted and coated.

Sorry if I came off as I hate the gun I think all my current fustrations got put into the gun, if you know what I mean.
I think I just need more time to play with the gun to get it working the way I want it to work. The first time I used it I was just not happy with he powder cloud out of the gun. Like I said I am sure this is all my fault and not really a fault of hte gun itself.

            again I am sorry

Those settings are correct I run 40-45 psi to the controller and the gauge on the left is usually around 1 with most powders/situations. The dial on the left will change with every powder and my even need to be adjusted while spraying an odd shaped part. These are not plug and play guns LOL. To have a more consistent gun, which most people using a hobby gun want, requires you be able to make adjustments. As these other guys are finding out a lot of practice helps and as you learn the gun you will find that "SWEET SPOT" (you like that don't you? ) that can be used about 70% of the time.

Well, I've been too busy with my day job, vacation, and kids return to school, but I did find time last night to mess with the king gun again.

The powder valve that I added continues to work well, but I think I discovered the primary root cause for the buildup in the barrel. Here's a link to another thread with some theories (read this, or the rest of this post won't make sense):

                          viewtopic.php?f=5&t=638&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a
Here's my findings from last night:
My compressor is set at a min set point of 95PSI, with upwards of 125PSI on the high end. From the beginning (when I received the king gun), I hooked this directly to the king gun (with a desiccant snake in between). I assumed that this was OK as the controller box has the regulator. In a previous post, I had a theory that the solenoid was no working properly, causing a surge of PSI and flow at the gun (and venturi powder suction action) when you released the trigger. So to make a long story shorter, last night I regulated the input to the back of the king controller to about 85PSI and I found the surge nearly disappeared and buildup within the tube reduced to zilch, even with the aftermarket powder valve wide open. I experimented and found that above 90 PSI input, the solenoid surges upon trigger release, getting worse with higher PSI. I suspect the solenoid is not rated above this input PSI, and nothing in the cryptic instructions defines the input PSI .

Bottom line: your air input to the king controller should not be above 85PSI. I shot a wheel with KL primer last night and it worked just fine after I got the powder flow dialed in.

Now it's on to the back ionization issue-- I plan to recoat a few things and use the suggested techniques and grounding methods defined in other posts. If these don't work, I'm going to consider buying an AC unit for my shop to get the humidity down. With any luck, I'll be 'on the road' with this gun and looking forward to a mini hopper and pump design to take it to the next level.
