  • IR Gun - Suggestions

Alright so I'm picking up an Infrared Thermometer sometime over the weekend. Any suggestions? Obviously we always want to buy as much as we can afford... Looking for a reasonably priced unit.

    Sears has a Craftman IR gun for $80: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/search_10153 ... d=infrared

Capable of 0 to 1000 deg. F so the 400 degrees or less that I require would be perfect. Read the reviews and doesn't seem like a bad product.

I've never owned an IR gun so I'm not really sure what to look for. This gun will get plenty of use but keep in mind that I don't powder coat full-time... It will see a few hours of use M-F and stay pretty busy during the weekends. Any other suggestions within that price range?

    Thanks!

That's a good question and I wish I knew the answer. I've tried looking all over the place for an answer but I have come up with nothing...

It matters? Mine reads anything - walls, pipes, furniture...

One thing to look at is the distance ratio. The one listed above has a 1" read zone at 8". It'll have a 2" zone @ 16" etc...

You need to get close so you don't read more of the oven than the part.

I have always read whatever I shot at with my low price one. The only problem you encounter a lot is the kick back reflection of the part and getting a false reading. Make sure you take a few reading so just maybe you get a correct one. Someone told me that they have metal shot in flat black high temp paint and that helps but you need dif types of metal and thickness that's close to your part to get it better.

The thickness Mil meters are the ones that want read every thing. My cheep Harbor Freight one want read thickness on aluminum. Those get expensive real quick.
